Karajini National Park: walking into the red rocks / Caminando entre las rocas rojas

Chasm at Weano Gorge
 Jun 12-15

We drove 624 Km to arrive at Karijini National Park at Hamersley Range; the straight road was interrupted by a section of undulating road and then became a vast rocky land covered with spinifex, changing from the red colour of the earth to a green and yellow.  Some hills and the flight of Black Kites broke the monotony, keeping our attention active.

Mt D'Coursy on the road to Karijini
Spinifex, the predominant grass

Mt. Jarndunmunha: the Yinhawangka people's name for  the hlll in Tom Price.

10 Km after taking the dirt road to Tom Price, the Nanutarra road, one of our tyres blew; we spent almost an hour switching to the spare, the level of the car was so low that we had to dig under it, in hard stony gravel, to place the jack. After that it was clear to us that it was not going to be possible to arrive at Karijini. Next day at 7:00 am in the industrial area of Tom Price we installed the new tyre and continued to our destination.

Junction pool lookout

Hancock Gorge at Weano Gorge area
En Karijini, there are five areas to explore; based on their geographical location, we visited four of them simply because the fifth was so far from where were starting: Weano Gorge area,  the Joffre and Knox Gorges, Kalamina Gorge and falls, and the Dales and Gamer Smith gorges.

Second Pool at Hancock Gorge

Spider Pass at Hancock Gorge
The area of Weano Gorge offers access to a 4 different gorges, all of them with demanding descent, narrow passes and pools, all of them very enjoyable to climb and walk, and also to play with the light. The tracks are not long and the difficulty of access is varied. At the end of the day we were exhausted and we were able to recognize new marks in our bodies.

Weano Gorge on the way to Handrail pool

Chasm at lower Weano Gorge

Handrail Pool - lower Weano Gorge

The gorges of Joffre and Knox were very challenging to access. Knox gorge has a dramatic track to go down to the river and then beautiful views while we were crossing over the river to arrive at a very narrow chasm where the track ends. This walk challenged all our limits, and at the end we were so tired that we decided to postpone walking down to the base the Joffre Gorge, which demands a lot of jumping on the cliff, and enjoyed the view from the lookout point.

Joffre Gorge from the Lookout
Kalamina Gorge and falls offers a long and pleasant walk in a wider gorge, we walked trough the base crossing the river several times, until reaching a pool with a window formation in one of the walls. We jumped into the pool, it  was cold, but good to overcome all our body pains. After a short swim, we started on our way back, absolutely energised and happy. Arriving at the campsite fatigue took the control, so we used our precooked meal to have an easy hot dinner; after that only an early night was possible.

Kalamina Falls

The river at Kalamina Gorge
The freezing pool at the end of the trail at Kalamina Gorge

Dales gorge was a great experience, a lot more accessible than the previous ones, has more trees in the river route, beautiful lagoons flowing east, amazing rock formations full of texture and natural asbestos fibre in the rock.

Dales Gorge

Fern pool, circular pool ,and the pool in Fortescue Falls, are places with singular beauty. In circular pool, there is a mix of vegetation which gives a sense of fresh air, the amphitheatre is impressive and it is possible to see the source of water coming from the rocks. Fortescue Falls has a magnificent exposure of dark and clear red banded rocks, which create a colosseum following the soft drop of water and a pristine pool with dark turquoise water; and finally, the Fern Pool is simply refreshing in all senses, the pool is a sacred place so all guests are invited to be silent, to refrain from jumping into the water, and to enjoy; we were swimming there after our circuit, the water was cold, but soon we could enjoy different temperatures, and the water in the falls was warm.

Fern Pool

Fortescue Falls and pool

At night the light of the moon and the clear sky captured our attention, but when the temperature dropped we jumped in to the car to enjoy our rest and the satisfaction of having explored this destination.

Ningaloo Reef: a wet trip

 Jun 8-11

We left Denham in the rain, this was the weather for all our trip until Carnarvon, the point at which we had to make a decision about our final destination that day. When we arrived, we confirmed that the roads north of Gascoyne Junction were closed and that it would be impossible to visit Kennedy Range National Park.

Blowholes Torndirrup, WA
We decide to ensure a dry night and stayed in Carnarvon. This town is an agricultural place located in the basin of the Gascoyne River; at this time of the year the river is very dry, however the close access to thee sea in the river mouth makes fishing another important activity. 70 Km north a collection of blowholes is the attraction, so we drove through desert scenery to visit the place; the structure of the rocks is surprisingly strong and the blow holes phenomenon very interesting.

Pink lake in the desert

Blowhole, Torndirrup, WA

At night we like to enjoy fresh sea food so we thought that the Yacht Club would be the best option and undoubtedly the most convenient, just two blocks from our motel. So we walked there and found a amazing meeting of local people, enjoying Friday evening with a BBQ. We thought that it would be a private venue, but no, we could join them, so this is the system: each person selects a bag of meat to barbeque, on the table there are three types of salad and baked potato. Each one grills his/her own meat and sausages and enjoys the meal, at the end each one picks up the plates and tools, disposes of the scraps, and leaves everything in the designated place.

The next day was the farmers’ market; everyone in the town was there to buy fresh fruit and vegetables, and some to search for a job opportunity in the farms - especially young travellers who need 3 month work certificates in remote areas to extend their visas. We found Colombian coffee, from Huila, call Ningaloo Coffee; we were not able to resist so we had Colombian coffee for the next two weeks which was really enjoyable,; also we found jams, mangos, and food all ready prepared for the next few days. There is a visible colony of Vietnamese people in the town, which made it possible to have cafe sua da and pho for brunch. We also bought all of the gadgets needed to explore Ningaloo reef.

We left the city at midday, and drove straight through to Exmouth; when we arrived at the southern end of the peninsula, a new element emerged in the scenery: mud mounds.  These huge structures were all around, they were spinifex termites mounds and are visible in Pilbara and Kimberley Regions too.

Magritte clouds with Termate mounth

We decided to sleep in a campsite close to the National Park because the campgrounds in the park were full. On the way an echidna was crossing the road, this time we could make a better photo. The campground had plenty of space.

Echidna at night

Cormorants at mangrove hide
The next day we went to explore the Ningaloo Reef, about 300 Km of reef which is accessible from the beach. Three places were suggested: Oyster Stacks, Turquoise Bay, and Lakeside. The first was impressive in terms of small fish, transparent water, and a lot of molluscs. The current was strong, and we had to swim with determination to stay in the area. Turquoise Bay looks beautiful, and has two areas - the drift and the lagoon - the current in the drift was so strong that we could not explore, the lagoon was a peaceful pool, refreshing and enjoyable, but the water had a lot of particles and the visibility was poor. At the end of the day, we visited a mangrove area with a beautiful range of birds.

Looking out to sea at Cape Range N.P.

Mangrove Gerygone
We explored a canyon on the mountains of the peninsula, with magnificent views and a very dramatic rock wall, as a result we arrived in Coral Bay too late for the turtle tour; they allowed us to book the next day for the manta ray experience, and we were very happy to have the opportunity to swim with these giants. That afternoon we explored the coral bay, that was simply marvellous, a 20 minute walk to a sandy pool to reach a point in which a depression in the sea level let you swim between the coral walls. We spent almost two hours observing different fish, anemones, and the coral itself.

Shothole canyon at Cape Range N.P.

Shothole canyon at Cape Range N.P.
There was a prognosis of rain for the night; the rain was so strong that we has to get up in the middle of the night to relocate the awning to drain the water. After an early start, we arrived on time to the Experience Centre to discover the inevitable cancellation of the tour; the heave was so high that was impossible to navigate safely, the only option was to snorkel, so we did. We took a glass-bottomed boat, and went to enjoy the water,;the day was windy and that means cold. Both sites were beautiful; with healthy coral, a good variety of fish, and warm water which invited us to stay immersed.

View from Charles Knife Road at Cape Range N.P.

We did not see shark, whales, or manta ray, but we enjoyed our time in a pristine and well-preserved coral reef.

Big hugs,

Alan y Marce

Shark Bay: weather (and sights) - variable

 Jun 4-7

Red dune at Cape Peron
The route to Shark Bay was a long straight line, 300 Km of road extending to the horizon, accompanied by unpopulated land and in the protected areas the same low and colorful vegetation as in the previous days. We arrived at Billonong Road House, one of those iconic sites on the route, where the warmth of the service is exceptional and it is easy to have fun with the variety of the offer of goods and services, as well as with the recommendations for the road: a warning with 6 printed flies, and the sign "Do not forget your hat for flies".

Stromatolites at Hamelin Pool

At the southern end of Shark Bay, we visited Hamelin pool to appreciate one of the oldest living ecosystems, stromatolites, existing 3500 million years ago when there were no other complex life forms on earth. These living systems are made up of different types of cyanobacteria, which live harmoniously taking advantage of the products which each type generates. These colonies create structures similar to rocks and for that reason they are named living fossils. The water of Hamelin Pool has a salt concentration twice as high as the surrounding seawater, so there are no natural predators which can affect the colonies; as always the main predator is man. Further south we had visited another lake with these structures, and in spite of the multiple signs indicating the fragility of the system and the need not to touch the structures, to protect them, tourists enter the water to take pictures, consequently almost all the colonies are damaged, but here they are clearly healthy!

Sea snakes
... Finalmente.

Little Pied Cormorant
We decided to explore the Shark Bay marine park the next day; we took one of the catamarans available for this exploration, it was estimated that the trips would be cancelled the following three days owing to bad weather. When we arrived at the Port, in Monkey Mia, the sea was restless, very windy, but according to the crew there was a good forecast for the sighting of dolphins; two hours later: 2 sea snakes hugging each other and a cormorant which had taken enough Dramamine to be in the sea, several swallows who found refuge on the boat, and nothing more. Thirty minutes later a dolphin! ... finally.

Sea turtles under protection in the Aquarium

We left Monkey Mia to explore Eagle Bluff, with expansive landscapes and rich marine life, seagrass, dolphins, sharks, and turtles; all the animals were there, at least in the information display of the park, we saw only the seagrass, which is a very important species for oxygen and here they were a good source. So, after two not very successful experiences, it was time to go to the aquarium; there we had the opportunity to understand more about the species available in the bay and the importance of each species in the balance of the ecosystem, it was a worthwhile visit.

Road to Cape Peron

Our exploration of the Francois Peron National Park was made in a weather window, the prediction at the moment indicated rain from the night of the day of our arrival and for two days more, so we decided to use that day to explore the park and return to sleep in Denham. On arriving at the park, we found a sandy road and a station to adjust the pressure of our tyres; after that, we had a great trip to improve Marce's competencies in driving through sand and clay, two hours later we were in the northern part of the peninsula, the cliffs had the mix of red Peron sandstone at the bottom and over this the white Tamala limestone. In Cape Peron the red sandstone is well exposed and the wind created a river of sand painful for our skin.

Cliffs at Cape Peron

The structure of the clifts

After the initial sandblasting, we moved southwest to the beaches; we found a interesting coastline, with impressive topography, and wild waters; inland the predominant green and gray carpet is interrupted by ancient salt lakes located in the depression point between dunes, call locally Birridas, today the lakes are mostly dry and the superficial layer is Gypsum. During winter, the groundwater level increases covering some of the lake surface, that shallow water is the home for several fishes and plants, and valuable places for bird reproduction. The vegetation on them is red, so each lake looks like a dot in the green.

The beaches

Small Crab
Denham was a good base from which to move around, a calm town with the basic facilities to enjoy the area, the exhibition in the visitor centre has a very good reputations, unfortunately, with the downpour of the night, the centre flooded and the exhibition was closed to the public when we went there the following morning.

Denham

Pinnacles at Nambung National Park
 Jun 1-3

Pinnacles at Nambung National Park
The Coral Coast is a region in Western Australia, from Perth to Ningaloo Reef to the north. We  headed to Cervantes as our first destination after leaving Perth at the beginning of the afternoon and as expected, we arrived just at the end of the day, with enough time to organize our camp and think about dinner. Determined to explore the local delights we found two restaurants open so we opted for the more traditional: the Cervantes Community Club; this follows the traditional design: to one side the kitchen with a cash register where the orders are taken, on the other hand the bar where it is possible to fill up with alcohol and follow the Aussie football matches. So we visited both sides, later to enjoy the game in progress, and the place.

More Pinnacles at Nambung N. P.

We explore Nambung National Park, multiple white dunes covered with a singular vegetation, limited by the sea to the west, and by a desert of limestone pinnacles to the east. The pinnacles emerge among the fine sand, creating a mysterious landscape. We walked around and delighted ourselves with the beautiful formations. We spent the rest of the day touring the coast along the scenic Indian Ocean route: white beaches, turquoise waters, and hundreds of visitors enjoying the weekend. We ended the day in a camp secluded from the sea and specializing in wild flowers.

The golden vegetation

Yucca at Western Flora
Exploring this area near Eneabba was rewarding: sandy ground covered with different shrubs in shapes and sizes, connected by a golden colour which predominates everything; the morning was cool which allowed us to walk the trails to the river and return before the temperature rose. Although we did not find many flowers, owing to the lack of rain, we learned about different fruits and seeds, which are novel because of their resistance, their materials, and their mechanisms for their opening and rooting.
Chapman Valley

Pink Lake at Port Gregory
We continued the route to Geraldton en route to Kalbarri: three aspects were attractive, initially Chapman Valley, an agricultural area which had not yet been seeded at the time, which is bounded on the east by a mountain range which in certain sectors reveals its strata. In Geraldton, we enjoyed the infrastructure of its coastal park, which offers everyone opportunities to enjoy the place, and further north, in Port Gregory, another beautiful pink lake, which is still delicious to see.
Natural Bridge at Kalbarri National Park
Kalbarri National Park
Kalbarri National Park has two sections, a coast beautiful for its cliffs and the erosive processes on the rock there, which in contrast to the turquoise sea, creates breathtaking landscapes, and another inland, around Murchison River, with its colourful canyons, where all living things have space, and all history is stored in shapes and colors between one layer and another of the rock. We walked the trails at the top of the canyons and those that took us to the river; the warmth of the sun embraced us, as did the flies, which adhered to our body, so that we travelled together: they enjoyed our juices and we the massage of their tiny legs on our skin.

Kalbarri National Park

Nature's Window at The Loop, Kalbarri N.P.
Kalbarri is a small town built around the river mouth, creating an inlet of calmer waters as far as the point at which the waves of the sea start; a perfect place for water sports and fishing. We found there the best excuses for not cooking for ourselves, so we enjoyed rich restaurants and cafes every day.

The southwest of Australia, and the impact of the southwesterly fronts…

 May 17-31

Having arrived at the south-western coast of Western Australia after crossing the Nullarbor, we found ourselves in a green, agricultural, region, with beautiful beaches and rocky promontories. Unfortunately we arrived at the same time as a strong “southwesterly” weather front, described by the local residents as “arriving straight from Antarctica” and which brought strong winds, heavy rain, and low temperatures. Alan’s recollection of the climate of this region, learned at school, is “warm wet westerly winds in winter”. This seems to be true in general, however when we were in the region the front passing through meant more or less constant rain, and nights which were really cold. We awoke one morning to find ice on the inside of the windscreen, resulting in limited enthusiasm to get up and get dressed.

Cape Le Grand National Park
So, our first exploration of the region was to spend some time on the south coast. We visited various sites in Cape le Grand National Park, making our way west to Esperance, the first town since leaving Ceduna. We then took the Coastal Route as far as Blue Haven and Twilight Beach before returning to Esperance for the night. The following day, we took a short detour (something like 600Km) to visit Wave Rock, well-publicized in the visitors’ guides, and which afforded the opportunity to walk around and onto the rock itself.

Esperance

We then headed to visit friends in Denmark - Paul and Gwen - whom Alan had not seen for about a decade, and who now run a winery outside the town. The setting is green and reminiscent of temperate farmland in Western Europe; we enjoyed sampling the excellent wine they produce, and catching with them through conversations at dinner, and indeed before and after.

After this we explored more of the region, stopping at the Sandalwood Factory nearby on our way to , Fitzgerald River National Park, where we stayed at an attractive campsite behind the beach in thick woods. At Point Ann we were pleased to see Southern Right Whales passing along the coast. We passed through Bremer Bay on our way to the Porongurup Range, where we walked up to the impressive Granite Skywalk through pleasant forest. Arriving back at the coast we visited Elephant Rocks and Green’s Pool. The following day took us to the Giants’ Treewalk and Snake Big Tree Grove, then on to Karri Valley.

At Pemberton we visited the outstanding Peter Kovacsy Gallery, learning about impressive artistic techniques integrating glass, ceramics, wood, and metal.

The Giant at Walpole-Nornalup N.P.

We next headed for Margaret River, stopping at Donnell’s General Store en route. We visited the Gnarabup Lookout (our first view of the Indian Ocean since Tanzania!) and then Surfers’ Point (complete with surfers in a competition), then to Cowaramup for a night. We found ourselves in an area with many wineries, good restaurants, art galleries, and some crafts, although less than expected of the latter. We chose to visit the Cullen Winery, Vasse Felix Winery (where we enjoyed an excellent lunch), and the Yallingup Gallery, Canal Rocks, Sugarloaf Rock, and then stayed in Dunsborough that night.

Submarine flora at Busselton Jetty
Moving on we visited the famed Busselton Jetty and its aquarium, before the last stage of our journey to Perth, where we planned to spend a few days,  take advantage of being in the last big city we would visit until reaching Darwin, around a month later.

Bridge at Elizabeth Quay
In Perth we were able to spend some time in PICA, AGWA, and the Western Australia Library, enjoying the exhibitions in these. Elizabeth Quay was a good option for lunch, after which we visited the excellent Botanic Gardens. We also went to Fremantle by train, which proved to be an attractive place with art galleries, restaurants, and historic architecture.

While in Perth we also caught up with friends, once again whom Alan had not seen for some years - Doug and Doug (over lunch overlooking the beach), and Arthur (at Elizabeth Quay) - it was great to catch up on our lives, as well as to receive advice on where we should plan to visit in the next stage of our journey, northwards along the Indian Ocean coast and into Pilbara and Kimberley.

Cottesloe Beach
