We were very impressed by the significant relief as we approached Alice Springs; to reach the southern suburbs one passes through “the Gap”, one of many gorges cutting through the MacDonnell ranges at various points to the west and the east. We explored several of these over the following days.

The west ranges have a series of gaps, chasms, and gorges in which the fractures in the rocks along with the presence of the ghost gum - a tree with white bark - created a sense of an image frozen just before the parts are projected into the air in an explosion, resulting in attractive landscapes and colours. In Ormiston Gorge and Redbank Gorge the rocks in the river beds are gorgeous, the variations of colours and embedded minerals were an irresistible attraction, in consequence we walked through the gorges, following the beds of the streams, jumping between the rocks, and surfing the soft sands. Glen Helen Gorge has a permanent stream and pool creating a refreshing view and great interplay between the water and the sky.

Las montañas al occidente tienen un serie de brechas, grietas, y cañónes en que las fracturas en las rocas, con presencia de los árboles “Ghost Gum” (un árbol con corteza blanca) crean la sensación de una imagen congelada justo antes de la proyección de las partes en el aire durante una explosion, que resultan en paisajes y colores atractivos. En Ormiston Gorge y Redbank Gorge las rocas en los lechos de las quebradas son hermosas, los variaciones en colores y minerales dentro de las rocas fueron una atracción irresistible, caminamos los cañones, siguiendo las quebradas, saltando entre las rocas, y haciendo “surfing”por las arenas. Going south Tyler’s Lookout offers an amazing view of the area and we were enchanted by the spectacular view of Tnorala (Gosse Bluff) Crater, formed 142 million years ago, by a meteorite crash to the earth.

Continuando al sur Tyler’s Lookout ofrece una vista maravillosa del área y nos encantó la vista espectacular del Cráter de Tnorala (Gosse Bluff), formado hace 142 millones de años por una meteorite chocando a tierra.

Palm Valley

Going east again and following the Finke River we arrived at Palm Valley, an oasis In the middle of arid land, created as a result of the protection against the wind offered by two parallel ranges, in which it was possible for the palms, Red Cabbage Palms, to survive and grow safely. The sandstone formations around offer a magnificent show to be appreciated. The route from the campground into the valley itself is an enjoyable 4x4 track, very rocky and slow, which provides the perfect speed to enjoy the view around.

Continuando al oriente nuevo y siguiendo el curso del Río Finke llegamos a Palm Valley, un oasis en la mitad de tierra seca, que resultó por la protección contra el viento de dos series de montañas paralelos, dentro del valle fue posible para las palmas Red Cabbage sobrevivir y crecer con seguridad. Las estructuras arenosas alrededor ofrecen una vista magnífica para apreciar. La ruta del campamento al Valle es en sí misma deliciosa, muy rocosa y lenta, que da oportunidad para disfrutar la vista.

Our last stop on the west side was Hermannsburg, an old mission established in 1877, well-recognised for pottery and as the home of Albert Namatjira, the most important aboriginal artist of his time, who inspired a school of art in the centre. The art gallery there is one of the best we visited in the area, the artists all local or related to locals; all the pieces were created with care.

Nuestra última parada al occidente fue Hermannsburg, una misión antigua establecida en 1877, bien reconocida por su cerámica y como el hogar de Albert Namatjira, el artista aborigen más importante de su época, quien inspiró un escuela de arte en el Centro. La galería de arte allá es uno de las mejores que visitamos en la zona, todos los artistas locales o familiares de locales; todas las piezas creadas con cuidado.

After this extensive trip we explored the eastern ranges, surprisingly the landscape is very different and the route runs behind the main escarpment, however that difference brings a different beauty. N’dala Gorge is advertised as having many examples of petroglyphs. This proved to be accurate, and it was rewarding to find a great number as we made our way up the gorge. It was a real pleasure to encounter evidence of the traditional representation of plants which it’s possible to find in contemporary art, especially in the work of the women in Atwajngxxxx Art. We returned through the gorge, in which one can see evidence of the geological upheaval which has resulted in this relief, with multicoloured strata, steeply inclined on all sides.

Después de este viaje extenso exploramos las montañas al oriente; sorprendentemente el paisaje es muy distinto y la ruta pasa detrás de la escarpa principal, y esta diferencia trae una belleza singular. N’dala Gorge es conocido como un sitio con muchos ejemplos de petroglifos. Comprobamos que es así, fue enriquecedor encontrar muchos cuando exploramos el cañón. Fue muy placentero encontrar evidencia de la representación tradicional de plantas que pueden verse en arte contemporáneo, especialmente en el trabajo de las mujeres en Ampilatwatja. Volvimos a través del cañón, en el que uno puede ver evidencia del levantamiento geológico inmenso que ha creado éste relieve, con capas multicolor, inclinadas abruptamente en todos lados.

Amazing and dramatic Cliffs were present in Trephina Gorge; in addition we found the biggest Ghost Gum tree in the country and then took the rocky track up to John Hayes Rockhole, with a number of pools descending the narrow course of this rocky canyon; even though the stream was not flowing the gorge was impressive.

Encontramos dramáticos precipicios en Trephina Gorge; adicionalmente el árbol Ghost Gum más grande en el país, y después tomamos la trocha rocosa a John Hayes Rockhole, allí varias  piscinas se forman en el lecho del cañón estrecho y rocoso; a pesar del hecho que el agua no estaba fluyendo el cañón fue impresionante.

These ranges, geologically old and eroded, offered a wide range of vistas and enjoyment as we explored them out of Alice Springs as well as from attractive campsites set in beautiful locations.

South to the centre and beyond / Sur al Centro y más allá

Only 1497 Km between us and Alice Springs, a drive to enjoy the limited attractions on the Stuart Highway: the first day we drove to Katherine on a route which we now knew well. Heading south the following day we arrived at Mataranka Homestead, a place in the heart of Elsey National Park, recognised for its hot springs, barramundi fishing, and “real outback experience”.

Solo 1497 Km para llegar en Alice Springs, un paseo para disfrutar las atracciones limitadas de la Carretera de Stuart: el primer día conducimos a Katherine por una ruta ahora bien conocida. El siguiente día, continuamos al sur y llegamos a Mataranka Homestead, un lugar en el corazón del Parque Nacional Elsey, conocido por sus termales, pesca de barramundi, y la “experiencia outback verdadera”.

Bitter Springs

Immediately prior to arriving at the homestead , we took the short access road to Bitter Springs. The springs are a short walk from the car park, and are justifiably popular. One can enter the waters and then float downstream gently in the clear and warm water, arriving at a point from which it is a short walk back to the starting point, from which one can repeat the trip as many times as one wishes - a very convenient arrangement! We visited this place at 11:30 am and the temperature was only 32 deg C, so going into the water at 34 deg C was a pleasure.

Inmediatamente antes de llegar al Homestead, tomamos una ruta corta a Bitter Springs. Los termales se alcanzan a través de una caminata corta desde el parqueadero, y una vez alli es posible comprender porque son tan populares. Uno puede entrar al arroyo y flotar aguas abajo suavemente en agua transparente y cálida, al final llega a un sitio de que puede tomar una caminata corta al punto de inicio, desde donde puede repetir el circuito cuántas veces quiera- muy conveniente! Visitamos este lugar a las 1130h y la temperatura fue sólo 32 grados C, entonces entrar al agua a 34 grados C fue muy placentero.

Bitter springs

Some Km south was Mataranka, we arrived early enough to find a place to camp close to the main building; after setting up camp two hours of free time were welcome, so we went to explore the hot springs; the pool is a very comfortable place, in which everyone is enjoying the temperature of the water and the beautiful vegetation, even though it is not possible to follow the stream. That evening was full of events: a concert and a whip-cracking show. The Repeat Offenders played country, rock, blues, and calypso, to enthusiastic response from the assembly of “Grey Nomads” in the audience. They played three short sets with two longish breaks, perhaps to recuperate sufficient energy for the next set. The band played well, as could be expected from musicians with a lot of experience.

Unos Km al sur está Mataranka, llegamos suficientemente temprano para encontrar un sitio cercano al edificio principal; cuando habíamos establecido nuestro campamento tuvimos dos horas de tiempo libre que nos cayeron muy bien. Fuimos a explorar los termales: la lagunita es un sitio muy cómodo, todo el mundo disfrutando la temperatura del agua y la linda vegetación, a pesar de no poder seguir el flujo de la  quebrada. La noche estuvo llena de eventos: un concierto y la exhibición de manejo de látigo. Los Repeat Offenders tocaron músico del campo, rock, blues, y calypso, con aclamación entusiasta de los “Nómadas Grises” en la audiencia. Tocaron tres períodos cortos con descansos extensos, quizás para recuperar energía para las próximas canciones. Tocaron bien, como corresponde a músicos con mucha experiencia.

Following the concert came Nathan “Whippy” Griggs, world record holder for whip cracking in 5 categories. We had no expectations of this performance, since our knowledge of whip cracking is more or less non-existent; the performance was very entertaining, not only in terms of cracking whips at high speed, in time to music, and imitating different sounds, but also in the humourous style of the performance and the interactions with the audience.

Después de la música llego Nathan “Whippy” Griggs, quien tiene récords mundiales de manejo de látigo en cinco categorías. No teníamos expectativas sobre esta exhibición, porque tenemos casi nada de conocimiento sobre este asunto; el espectáculo fue muy divertido, no solo en términos del manejo del látigo a alta velocidad, acompañando músico, e imitando varios sonidos, también por el estilo humorístico y las interacciones con la audiencia.

The following day we enjoyed coffees (with only one shared cup available) and scones in Larrimah, in the famous Fran’s tea house, in which we discovered that Fran has been sick, so the place is operating under a new standard. Our next destination was Banka Banka Homestead, an old station converted to a campground; we arrived in rush hour, after waiting for a while we were finally located in the garden of the main house. That night there was live music, so at 6:30 we were there ready for the concert. The show started on time, the singer of country music had a very tired voice, and two of every three songs were related with prison subjects, the lyrics were easy to follow and our favourite was a song that said “the biggest disappointment for my family was me” - that made a lot of sense.

El día siguiente tomamos café (con solo una copa compartida) y scones in Larrimah, en la famosa Casa de Té de Fran, donde aprendimos que ella ha estado enferma, entonces el sitio está operando con nuevos estándardes y mas en modo sobrevivencia. Nuestro siguiente destino fue Banka Banka Homestead, una estancia antigua convertida a campamento; llegamos a la hora pico, después de esperar un tiempo, fuimos situados en el jardín de la casa principal. Esta noche tenían música en vivo, entonces a las 1830h estamos en el sitio listos para el concierto. Este comenzó puntualmente, el cantante de música del campo tenía su voz muy cansada, y dos de cada tres canciones trataron de temas de cárcel, los letras fueron fácil de seguir y nuestra favorita fue una canción que decia “la desilusión más grande de mi familia fui yo” - esto tenía mucho sentido.

In Tennant Creek we visited  Nyinkka  Nyunyu Art and Cultural Centre, with its main building in the shape of a lizard, the sacred animal of the dreaming connected with the place. We had a guided visit with Jerry Japarri, one of the elders. He did an excellent job of introducing us to the history, arts, and practices of the Warumungu people. He talked about men’s and women’s artwork, music and ceremonies, the plants, bush food, and other practical dimensions of life in the arid land.

En Tennant Creek visitamos Nyinkka Nyunyu Centro de Arte y Cultura, con su edificio principal en forma de lagarto, el animal sagrado por el “dreaming” conectado con el lugar. Tuvimos un tour con guía Jerry Jappari, un “elder” de la comunidad. El hizo un trabajo excelente, introduciendo la historia, arte, y prácticas del pueblo Warumungu. Nos habló sobre arte de hombres y mujeres, la música y las ceremonias, las plantas, la comida silvestre, y otros dimensiones prácticas de la vida en esta tierra seca.

Hundreds of kilometres later we arrived at Devils Marbles, a stunning array of giant marbles of granite, exposed on the surface of the land as a result of erosive processes. Enjoyable trails allows as explore the place. At sunset we arrived at Barrow Creek, a Road House and pub which was celebrating 70 years of operation this year. The campground was a huge parking place with access to the hotel’s ablutions; because of the size of our car we had a VIP place, the green garden close to the buildings. The bar was the centrepiece once again, covered with hundreds of notes with the name of the owner of each one; according to the myth, people started leaving money for their next visit, to ensure that even if they had spent all of their cash, they would still be able to get a drink. Today the tradition continues as a way to indicate their patronage. The night was freezing, a continuous wind howled through the night, and we realised that we had returned to cold weather.

Cientos de kilómetros después llegamos a Devils Marbles, una impresionante variedad de bolas gigantes de granito, expuestas en la superficie de la tierra como resultado de procesos erosivos. Senderos agradables nos permitieron explorar el lugar. Al atardecer llegamos a Barrow Creek, un Casa de carretera y un pub que celebra 70 años de funcionamiento este año. El campamento fue un gran estacionamiento con acceso a los baños del hotel; Debido al tamaño de nuestro automóvil, tuvimos un lugar VIP, el jardín verde cerca de los edificios. El bar fue el lugar clave una vez más, cubierto con cientos de billetes con el nombre del dueño de cada uno; Según el mito, la gente comenzó a dejar dinero para su próxima visita, para así asegurar poder tomarse un trago en la próxima visitamos así se hubiese gastado todo su dinero. Hoy la tradición continúa como una forma de indicar la visita al lugar. La noche estaba helada, un viento continuo aullaba a través de la noche, y nos dimos cuenta de que habíamos vuelto al clima frío.

Finally we arrived at Alice Springs, the business centre of the Centre. Alice offered us the opportunity to explore different groups of artists in the Centre lands,  in which in the 70’s people started to paint exploring new ways to preserve their culture. Each group had specific origins, the subjects are associated with dreaming expressed within the limits established by the elders, the owners and the protectors of these. Also the subjects are frequently relevant to daily life, plants, and animals; some groups used more abstraction and others are more figurative, it’s very common to have more women artists , and for them art is an additional source of income and part of the motivation of many groups. It was worth spending the time to appreciate the art of the central desert, including the exhibition in the Araluen Art Centre.

Finalmente llegamos a Alice Springs, el centro de negocios del Centro. Alice nos ofreció la oportunidad de explorar diferentes grupos de artistas en las tierras del Centro, en las que en los años 70 la gente comenzó a pintar, explorando nuevas formas de preservar su cultura. Cada grupo tiene orígenes específicos, sin embargo se considera que la habilidad básica proviene de las prácticas ancestrales de dibujar en arena y de la pintura del terrero para fines ceremoniales. Las obras están asociados con los sueños expresados dentro de los límites establecidos por los ancianos, los propietarios y los protectores de estos. También son frecuentes  los temas relativos a la vida diaria, plantas y animales; algunos grupos usan más abstracción y otros son más figurativos, es muy común tener más mujeres artistas, y para ellas el arte es una fuente adicional de ingresos y parte de la motivación de muchos grupos. Valió la pena pasar el tiempo para apreciar el arte del desierto central, incluida la exposición en el Centro de Arte de Araluen.

We visited the Desert Park, with some scepticism about its quality, and we were surprised ; the park recreated three ecosystems: woodlands, river lands, and sandy lands. In all of them plants and birds allowed us to integrate previous experiences and understand more relationships between elements and the way in which aboriginal people use the resources available. The park has a series of conversations with rangers about different subjects of natural and cultural life.

In Alice we prepared for the next step - the deserts in the “Red Centre”.

Visitamos el Desert Park, con cierto escepticismo sobre su calidad, y nos sorprendió; El parque recrea tres ecosistemas: bosques secos, tierras fluviales y tierras arenosas. En todos ellos, las plantas y las aves nos permitieron integrar experiencias previas y comprender más las relaciones entre los elementos y la forma en que las personas aborígenes usan los recursos disponibles. El parque tiene una serie de conversaciones con guardaparques sobre diferentes temas de la vida natural y cultural.

The magical Darwin and its surroundings /La mágica Darwin y sus alrededores

After some R&R in Katherine we made our way to Douglas Daly Park, entering the southern part of Litchfield National Park. This area is less visited than the more accessible areas close to the Stuart Highway, although the access roads are good. We spent a couple of days here, visiting the Douglas Daly Hot Springs one day and on the next taking what was described as a “short drive” (i.e., 287 Km) to visit Merrepen Arts Centre in Nauiyu on the Daly River, which is an excellent centre for local arts, where we were shown around by Kieren, a talented artist, and also met others in the thriving community. From Douglas Daly we then headed north to Darwin.

Después de unos días de descanso en Katherine fuimos a Douglas Daly, entrando el area sur del parque nacional Litchfield. Esta zona es menos visitada que las áreas más cercanas al Carretera Stuart, sin embargo las rutas están en buen estado. Estuvimos allí unos días, visitando los termales de Douglas Daly un día, y el próximo haciendo lo que fue descrito como “un paseo corto” (de 287 Km) para ir al Centro de Artes Merrepen, en Nauiyu, a la orilla del Río Daly, que es un centro excelente de arte local, donde Kieren, un artista con mucho talento, nos guió y donde conocimos otros artistas de la comunidad. De Douglas Daly continuamos a Darwin.

Our visit to Darwin was satisfactory, as usual we successfully solved the practical issues of the trip and the maintenance of the car. In addition to that we found an enjoyable city, with rich art galleries, good food, spacious parks, and friendly people. We had a delightful dinner with Doug, Emily, and James, who happened to be visiting from Perth, and with Dani and Kirsty on their arrival from Sydney. We visited MAGNT, seeing the excellent Moon & Stars exhibition, and we visited the Mindil Beach Sunset Market, which proved to have a good range of local products and diversity of food stalls, with the sunset thrown in for good measure at no extra charge.

Nuestra visita a dos Darwin fue satisfactoria, como de costumbre resolvimos con éxito los asuntos prácticos del viaje y del mantenimiento del automóvil.  Además de eso, nos encontramos una agradable Ciudad, con ricas galerías de arte, buena comida, amplios parques y gente amable. Tuvimos una cena deliciosa con Doug, Emily y James, quienes estaban de visita desde Perth, y con Dani y Kisty a su llegada de Sydney. Visitamos Magnt, y recorrimos la exhibición Moon & Stars, para nuestro concepto excelente. Tambien, visitamos Mindil Beach Sunset Market, que demostró tener una buena variedad de productos locales y diversidad de puestos de comida, con la puesta del sol en buena medida sin costo adicional.

Heading south we made our way to Litchfield National Park, which proved to be very busy on this holiday weekend. After going to several campgrounds which had no space, we successfully found an “almost site” at Wangi Falls - a parking bay authorised for camping by the ranger. We then walked to the falls; initially we made a short walk to the tree top platforms, with the singular noises made by a colony of bats, then we returned to the magnificent pool at the base of the waterfall for a refreshing swim. As dusk fell hundreds of bats covered the sky, an overture to the symphony of the stars.

Nos dirigimos hacia el sur al Parque Nacional Litchfield, que resultó estar muy ocupado durante este fin de semana de vacaciones.  Después de ir a varios campamentos que no tenían espacio, encontramos con éxito un casi-sitio para acampar en Wangi Falls, una bahía de estacionamiento autorizada por el guardabosques.  Luego caminamos hacia las cataratas, inicialmente hicimos una corta caminata hacia la plataforma del bosque, con los ruidos singulares hechos por una colonia de murciélagos, luego regresamos a la magnífica piscina en la base de la cascada, para un refrescante baño.  Al caer el anochecer, cientos de murcielagos cubren el cielo, una obertura a la sinfonía de las estrellas.

In order to explore the northern area of the park we made our way to Cascades and walked up the creek past the lower cascades to Curtain Falls, and after a rest to appreciate this tranquil setting Marce climbed the curtain to see what was further upstream following which we returned the way we had come.  Taking advantage of the Litchfield Café, we stopped to refresh ourselves: coffee, Weis bars, and cool drinks were our choices. Looking at the information available we discovered that the Tjaynera falls, although described as relativel inaccesible, were only 11 Km off the tarred road and that there was a campsite available. The road is a little rough and requires fording a river, however we arrived at the site easily, set up camp, and after relaxing for a while, had a light lunch and then set off to walk up the creek to the falls.

Con el fin de explorar la zona norte del parque, nos dirigimos a Cascades y caminamos por el arroyo más allá de las cascadas inferiores a Courtain Falls y después de descansar para aprovechar este entorno tranquilo Marce subió la cortina para ver la sección superior, después de lo cual retomamos el camino de regreso.  Aprovechando la existencia de la cafetería Litchfield, nos detuvimos para refrescarnos, las elecciones fueron: café, el barras de helado Weis y la bebidas frías. Al observar la información disponible, descubrimos que las cataratas de Tjaynera, aunque se describen como relativamente inaccesibles, quedaban a solo 11 km de la carretera asfaltada y que había un campamento disponible.  El camino fue un poco tosco y tuvimos que vadear un río, sin embargo, llegamos al sitio fácilmente, establecimos el campamento y, después de relajarnos un rato y almorzar,  nos dirigimos a caminar por el arroyo hasta las cataratas.

The trail allowed us to observe the exotic density of the vegetation around the stream, the monsoon forest: paperbark trees, pandanus, carpentaria palms and gros filled the space. The trail ascended and descended gently to the base of the waterfall. The pool at the base invited us to a refreshing swim and also gave us the opportunity to try out Alan’s new acquisition, found at the Litchfield Café, a noodle. The rocky backdrop to the falls is a contorted mass of strata, with thick veins of quartz cutting through the structures.

El camino nos permitió observar la densidad exótica de la vegetación alrededor del arroyo, el bosque monzónico: arboles de corteza de papel, pandanus, Palmeras carpentarias y gro, llenan el espacio.  El sendero asciende y desciende suavemente hasta la base de la cascada.  La piscina en la base de la catarata nos invitó a un refrescante baño y también nos dio la oportunidad de probar la nueva adquisición de Alan: un Noodle azul que encontramos en el café Litchfield.  El fondo rocoso de las cataratas es una masa de estratos retorcidos, con gruesas vetas de cuarzo que atraviesan las estructuras.

Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole are the most accessible sites coming from the east. The first one is a two level waterfall, with a big refreshing pool at the bottom; it is possible to see this completely from a lookout, with the vibrant monsoon forest following the waters downstream. Hundreds of pool noodles walk were walking down the trail to use the pool, and we decided to walk in the other direction to explore the creek and enjoy the Buley Rockhole; there were three marked pools on the way and several more in the main Rockhole, in which we found more people than water, so we returned to the first pool in order to take advantage of the cool environment. This place was empty and the pool deep enough to feel the current of the creek; just after submerging our bodies a flock of tourists arrived and changed the pleasant moment, so we moved downstream, and just there a wary Goanna was resting close to the water. We decided to leave, and two minutes later when we were in the middle of changing our clothes the other people moved too and left the place calm for the Goanna’s enjoyment.

Florence falls

Las cataratas de Florencia y Buley Rockholes son los sitios más accesibles del parque entrando por el este.  La primera es una caída de dos niveles, con una piscina grande y fresca en la parte inferior, es posible verla completamente desde el mirador, con el vibrante bosque monzónico siguiendo las aguas río abajo.  Cientos de fideos de piscina caminaban por el sendero para usar la piscina, y decidimos caminar en la otra dirección para explorar el arroyo y disfrutar de Buley Rockholes, habían tres piscinas marcadas en el camino y varias más en el lugar principal, en los que  encontramos más personas que agua, así que volvimos a la primera piscina para aprovechar el ambiente fresco.  Este lugar estaba vacío y la piscina era lo suficientemente profunda como para sentir la corriente del arroyo, justo después de sumergir nuestros cuerpos, una bandada de turistas llegó y cambió el momento agradable, nos mudamos río abajo, y justo allí una cautelosa Gaona descansaba cerca del agua.  Decidimos abandonar el lugar, y dos minutos después, cuando estábamos cambiandono la ropa, los invasores también se mudaron y dejaron el lugar tranquilo para el disfrute de Goana.

Buley Rockholes

We refused to visit the termite mound exhibition in the park, because we had already seen several thousand, but we have to admit that they are huge!

Nos negamos a visitar la exposición de montículos de termitas en el parque, porque ya habíamos visto varios miles, ¡pero tenemos que admitir que son enormes!

On our way out of the park we stopped for a cold drink at the Rum Jungle Pub, Alan recalling the name of this location from his school geography lessons, as being a remote and exotic place.

Al salir del parque, nos detuvimos para tomar una bebida fría en el Rum Jungle Pub, Alan recordo el nombre de este lugar de sus lecciones de geografía de la escuela, como un lugar remoto y exótico.

Kakadu, la riqueza de lo diferente / The richness of the different

Contrario a nuestros planes la exploración de Kakadu comenzó por el norte, para nuestra fortuna Dani y Kirsty, primas de Alan, se unieron a nosotros en Darwin para disfrutar juntos por algunos días. Después de muchas deliberaciones u conscientes del tamaño del parque, decidimos explorar el extremo nororiental  y para ello tuvimos que cruzar desde el occidente,  las planicies inundables que dominan el paisaje y que se enriquece con el cruce de los ríos Llenos de agua y cocodrilos de agua salada.

Contrary to our plans the exploration of Kakadu began in the north, for we had the good fortune that Dani and Kirsty, Alan's cousins, joined us in Darwin to enjoy the area together for a few days. After many deliberations and aware of the size of the park, we decided to explore the northeastern end initially and for this we had to cross from the west the flood plains that dominate the landscape and which are enriched by the crossings of rivers full of water and saltwater crocodiles.

En esta zona dos lugares permiten apreciar los pantanales en este momento del año, la vista del centro de visitantes es extensa y con un buen par de binoculares es fácil divertirse avistando los pájaros del lugar.  Más adelante Mamukala fue el lugar correcto para apropiar la diversidad y belleza de estos pantanales, una caminata corta llena de pájaros pequeños y rápidos nos llevó a una hermosa plataforma de observación: silencio, solo el canto de los pájaros, nenúfares flotando plácidamente, y a lo lejos, bandadas de garzas reubicando su lugar de alimentación.

Mamukala

In this area two places allow you to appreciate the swamps, at this time of the year the view from the visitor centre is extensive and with a good pair of binoculars it is easy to have fun watching the birds in the place. Later at Mamukala, it was the right place to appropriate the diversity and beauty of these swamps, a short walk full of small and quick-moving birds led us to a beautiful observation deck: silence, only the song of the birds, lilies floating peacefully, and far away flocks of herons relocating their feeding site.

Dejamos la ruta principal para visitar Ubirr, un sitio famoso por su pintura rupestre, el pantanal está enriquecido por el bosque de eucalipto y pastos altos y una imponente montaña rocosa cuya pared acompaña la ruta.

We left the main road to visit Ubirr, a site famous for its cave painting, the swamp is enriched by the eucalyptus forest and tall pastures, and an imposing rocky mountain whose wall accompanies the route.

Ubirr es un lugar con extraordinarias muestra de arte rupestre, las formas y la delicadeza de los trazos son evidencia de la gran capacidad artística de los pueblos que las generaron. La galería principal es una sorpresa progresiva, es tanto lo que hay que ver, que para descubrirlo hay que re visitarlo varias veces y usar la diferencia en la luz para disfrutar plenamente.  Nadab lookout es un lugar especial, desde allí es posible apreciar todos los componentes del ecosistema de esta zona: pantanales, bosques de eucalipto y pequeños bosques más densos cercanos a las fuentes de agua, además de los afloramientos rocosos de la zona. Visitamos el lugar al atardecer la luz y los sonidos de los pájaros y los insectos fueron encantadores.

Rock art at Ubirr

Ubirr is a place with extraordinary samples of rock art, the shapes and delicacy of the strokes are evidence of the great artistic capacity of the peoples who generated them. The main gallery is a progressive surprise, it has so much to see that to discover it you have to re-visit it several times and use the differences in the light to enjoy it fully. Nadab lookout is a special place, from there it is possible to appreciate all the components of the ecosystem of this area: swamps, eucalyptus forests, and small denser forests near water sources, in addition to the rocky outcrops of the area. We visited the place at sunset - the light and the sounds of the birds and insects were lovely.

Pasamos la noche en Merl, un paraíso de zancudos, 17 diferentes especies compiten por tu sangre. Esperamos con calma a que bajara la concentración pero no fue posible, después de acelerar el paso para terminar con nuestras maniobras de sobrevivencia, entramos al carro y a pesar de nuestros cuidados algunos zancudos entraron también. Esa noche fue sangrienta, pero era tal era el cansancio que no luchamos mas, al día siguiente el canto de las cacatúas fue nuestro despertador y mi primera imagen del día fue  la de 12 zancudos adheridos a la malla de la ventana deseando un espacio para entrar, cuatro de ellos estaban adentro descansando después de su noche de farra. En el carro de Dani y Kirsty la situación no fue diferente los zancudos las atacaron sin piedad.

Maguk trail

We spend the night in Merl, a paradise of mosquitoes, 17 different species compete for your blood. We calmly waited for the concentration to drop but it was not possible, after accelerating our steps to end our survival manoeuvres, we entered the car and despite our care some mosquitoes also entered. That night was bloody, but our fatigue was such that we didn't fight anymore, the next day the song of the cockatoos was our alarm clock and Marce's first image of the day was 12 mosquitoes attached to the window mesh trying to find a space to enter, four of them were inside resting after their orgy. In the car of Dani and Kirsty the situation was no different - the mosquitoes attacked them mercilessly.

Rock art at Burrungkuy

Burrungkuy is a extraordinary rock art place, the site is located in a site of conglomerate formation, and is possible to see pebbles of quartz polished by the elements. The artwork is impressive for its composition, complexity, and level of preservation. The lookout offered a rich view of the escarpment, the plains, and also of the smoke of the controlled fires in the park.

Burrungkuy es un lugar extraordinario de arte rupestre, el sitio está ubicado en un conjunto de conglomerados, y es posible ver guijarros de cuarzo pulido por los elementos. La obra de arte es impresionante por las composiciones, la complejidad y el nivel de conservación. El mirador nos ofrecio una vista generosa dl farallón, las llanuras y el humo de los fuegos para control del paso en el parque.

Maguk fue nuestro siguiente destino, parte de la sección conocida como Mary River, después de 10 km de corrugaciones y polvo, se llega al estacionamiento lleno de sombras, el sendero es trazado a lo largo del arrollo, así que es posible apreciar los árboles con corteza de papel y los juegos de las palmas de Pandanus en el agua. El sendero conduce a la base de la catarata, una piscina profunda, fresca y de aguas transparentes contenidas por las paredes de roca recibe a los visitantes; fue delicioso nadar allí, sentir la inmensidad del sitio y disfrutar la tranquilidad en el ambiente.  El sendero hacia la cima es más desafiante, principalmente el descenso al nivel del agua, este es un sistema de piscinas en tres niveles que fluyen a través de un cañon estrecho, explorarlo fue delicioso especialmente porque hay que trepar por la roca para llegar al tercer nivel y luego nadar y saltar las cascadas hasta el punto principal de caída del agua.

Maguk was our next destination, part of the section known as Mary River, after 10 Km of corrugations and dust you reach the parking lot full of shadows, the path is drawn along the creek, so it is possible to appreciate the Paperbark trees and Pandanus palms with hadows playing in the water. The trail leads to the base of the waterfall, a deep, fresh pool with transparent waters contained by the rock walls welcomes visitors; it was delicious to swim there, feeling the immensity of the site and enjoying the tranquility of the environment. The path to the top is more challenging, mainly the descent to the water level, this is a system of pools on three levels which flow through a narrow canyon, exploring it was delicious especially because one has to climb the rock to reach the third level and then swim and jump the waterfalls to the main point of the waterfall.

 Gunlom, más al sur pero en la misma estructura rocosa, cuenta con un campamento arborizado en la base de la pared de roca, cerca de la catarata cuenta con una gran piscina. El ascenso a la cima de la cascada es exigente, sin embargo, en la cima, las piscinas son deliciosas y las vistas excelentes, una piscina infinita natural. Nadar y saltar la roca para explorar las diferentes piscinas fue emocionante.

Gunlom infinity pool upper part

Gunlom, further south but in the same rocky structure, has a wooded camp at the base of the rock wall, near the waterfall, which has a large pool. The ascent to the top of the waterfall is demanding however once at the top, the pools are delicious and the views excellent, a natural infinity pool. Swimming and jumping the rock to explore the different pools was exciting.

Yurmikmik Walks is a location close to a boulder structure further south. The creek was dry but the views of the escarpment and plains at the lookout were refreshing, the wind was continual and useful to allow completing the trail during the hottest hours of the day.

Yurmikmik Walks es un lugar cerca de una estructura de cantos rodados más al sur. El riachuelo estaba seco pero las vistas de la escarpa y las llanuras en el mirador eran refrescantes, el viento era continuo y útil para completar el sendero durante las horas más calurosas del día.

Yellow river

We also explored a series of billabongs around the central area, Yellow Waters has a very extensive view of the waters and the wetlands, which is very accessible walking or using a boat. We saw traditional water birds: including the impressive Jabiru, the Pygmy goose, the King spoonbill, and as dessert, wild pigs.  Anbangbang billabong is in the Burrungkuy area, the rocks of that place are the background to the lake, the place is immense, tall trees mark the limits of the billabong and the water is adorned by the brilliant green lilies and their flowers. For the first time the presence of birds was abundant, not only in species also in numbers. We walked around the shore calmly with time to observe the natural beauty. Home billabong and Jim Jim billabong, the first one walking distance from the campsites, offer expansive views of Jim Jim Creek, with crocodile, dingo, and small birds playing between the trees.

También exploramos una serie de billabongs alrededor del área central, Yellow Waters (Aguas Amarillas) tiene una vista muy extensa de las aguas y los humedales, es muy accesible caminando o usando un bote. Vimos aves acuáticas tradicionales: incluyendo el impresionante Jabiru, el ganso pigmeo, espátula real y para completar los cerdos salvajes. Anbangbang billabong, está en el área de Burrungkuy, las rocas de este lugar son el telón de fondo del agua, el lugar es inmensos, los árboles altos marcan los límites del billabong y el agua está adornada por las Lilis brillantes. Por primera vez la presencia de aves fue abundante, no solo en especies sino también en números. Caminamos tranquilamente por la orilla con tiempo para observar la belleza natural. Home billabong y Jim Jim billabong, el primero a una corta distancia a pie desde el campamento, ofrece una vista amplia de Jim Jim Creek, con cocodrilos, dingos y pequeños pájaros jugando entre los árboles.

South Alligator River

Going west again we stopped at the South Alligator River, were we were impressed by the rapid flow of water moving upstream as the tide was rising. We had a rich conversation with Rob, a Kakadu Ranger, who shared with us insights into the river, wildlife, and life in the area, and the differences between dry and wet seasons; his beautiful description of the dancing of the Brolgas fuels our desire to return to this rich area to experience other seasons.

Yendo al oeste nuevamente, nos detuvimos en el río South Alligator, donde nos impresionó el rápido flujo de agua que se movía río arriba a medida que aumentaba la marea. Tuvimos una rica conversación con Rob, un guardabosques de Kakadu, quien compartió con nosotros ideas sobre el río, la vida silvestre y la vida en el área y la diferencia entre las estaciones secas y húmedas. Sus bellas descripciones de la danza de las grullas,  alimentó nuestro deseo de regresar a esta zona rica para experimentar otras estaciones.

Forest kingfisher at Fogg Dam

Our exploration of this ecosystem was completed with a visit through the Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, reported to be one of the richest areas for birdwatching, which description was justified by our experience. A walk through a tall forest provides an opportunity to see many birds, and then a boardwalk leads to viewing platforms, offering a excellent view over the wetland. We saw Jabiru, Forest Kingfisher, Rainbow bee-eater, a wide range of other waterbirds, including hundreds of ducks, goose and jacana, among others; the wetland is the home of a plantation of lotus, always facing the sun and enriching the charm of the place.

Nuestra exploración de este ecosistema se completó con una visita a través de la Reserva de Conservación de la Presa Fogg, que según se informa es una de las áreas más ricas para la observación de aves, cuya descripción fue justificada por nuestra experiencia. Un paseo por un bosque alto, brindó la oportunidad de ver muchas aves, y luego un paseo marítimo conduce a plataformas de observación, que ofrecen una excelente vista sobre el humedal. Vimos Jabiru, Forest Kingfisher, Rainbow bee-eater, una amplia gama de otras aves acuáticas, incluidos cientos de patos, gansos y jacana, entre otros; el humedal es el hogar de una plantación de flores de loto, mirando el sol y enriqueciendo el encanto del lugar.
