Australia: exploring the Dreamtime / Australia: exploración del "Tiempo de los Sueños"

After our African trip, we started thinking of where to go next for a “big trip”. We retain several destinations for the future, and have made some shorter trips since returning from Africa, however early this year decided that our next major trip will be to Australia. We were enchanted by the diversity of opportunity to experience a wide range of ecosystems, wildlife, and scenery - Australia is very different from other parts of the world in terms of the birds, animals, and plants which we will encounter. It’s also distinctive in terms of its history and culture, and we wanted to learn about the traditions and stories of the people.  An additional factor in our thinking is that we have a number of friends and family in Australia and wanted to reconnect with them sooner rather than later.

Después de nuestro viaje a África, comenzamos a pensar cuál sería nuestro siguiente destino para un viaje largo. Retenemos varios destinos para el futuro, y hemos hecho algunos viajes cortos desde que regresamos de África, sin embargo temprano durante el año anterior decidimos que nuestro siguiente viaje mayor sería Australia. Estamos encantados con la diversidad de oportunidades para experimentar un amplio rango de ecosistemas vida salvaje y paisaje, Australia es muy diferente de otras partes del mundo en términos de pájaros animales y plantasQue podremos encontrar. También es diferente en términos de su historia y cultura y nosotros queremos aprender acerca de las tradiciones y las historias de las personas. Un factor adicional en nuestra pensamiento es que tenemos un grupo de familia y amigos en Australia y queremos poder reconectarnos con ellos más temprano que tarde.

We started thinking of general ideas early in the year, and started Stage 2 planning on August 5th.

Some key questions were:

• Should we restrict ourselves to Australia, or should we plan on visiting New Zealand as well?
• Should we rent a vehicle? …buy one? …ship our own for the trip, then home again?
• What are the climatic considerations – when should we plan to be where?
• Where should we start (and finish)?
• Security and Visas
  

 
Comenzamos a pensar sobre cosas generales en el segundo trimestre del año, y la fase 2 de nuestra planeacion en agosto 5.  Algunas de nuestras preguntas fueron:

• Debemos restringirnos sólo a Australia o debemos  planear visitar Nueva Zelanda?
• Debemos rentar un vehículo, comprar uno o enviar nuestro vehículo por barco para devolverlo a casa de nuevo?
• Cuáles son las consideraciones climáticas que debemos tener en cuenta? cuándo debemos planear estar en cada sitio?
• Cuándo debemos comenzar y finalizar?
• Cuáles son los asuntos de seguridad y visas a tener en cuenta?

Los punto a ser unidos

Our plans started taking shape, both in terms of the first step in route planning (destinations), and in terms of consideration of these questions.
Destinations: It rapidly became clear that Australia alone offered a huge variety of attractions. 

Nuestro plan comenzó a tomar forma en ambos sentidos, los destinos y las preguntas anteriores. 

Destinos: rápidamente fue claro que Australia en sí mismo nos ofrece una gran variedad de atracciones. 


The question / Las preguntas

·      Should we restrict ourselves to Australia, or should we plan on visiting New Zealand as well?/ Debemos restringirnos sólo a Australia o debemos  planear visitar Nueva Zelanda? 

•      We decided that this question would depend partially on how much time we would need for Australia, and partially on whether we would need to leave Australia during the trip to apply for additional visas.  
•      Decidimos que la respuesta a esta  pregunta depende parcialmente de cuánto tiempo vamos a necesitar en Australia, y parcialmente, si necesitaremos dejar a Australia durante el viaje para aplicar por una visa adicional.

 

·      Should we rent a vehicle? …buy one? …ship our own for the trip, then home again?/
Debemos rentar un vehículo, comprar uno o enviar nuestro vehículo por barco para devolverlo a casa de nuevo?

• We looked into the costs of renting – too expensive for the probable time for the trip (although perhaps a good option for someone planning a trip of a month or two). We evaluated the costs of buying a vehicle, etiher fully prepared and “ready to roll”, or to buy a suitable vehicle and prepare it, and found that prices for vehicles which we would prefer were not cheap. Friends whom we met in Zambia on our (and their) African trip are making a similar trip around Australia this year, and it was very tempting to buy their vehicle at the end of the trip, although it would require some modifications for the type of camping we prefer – this was attractive, however… we then evaluated what it would take to modify our current vehicle (in Colombia) and ship it to and from Australia for the trip. Once we had quotes for modifications and shipping it became clear that this was to be the best approach.
• Revisamos el costo de de alquilar  -es muy costoso para el tiempo probable el viaje, quizás sea una buena opción cuando se planea un viaje de uno o dos meses,- evaluamos el costo de comprar un vehículo, tanto uno completamente preparado y listo para comenzar, o comprar uno apropiado y prepararlo por nosotros, encontramos que los precios de los vehículos que nosotros preferimos no son baratos. Amigos que conocimos en Zambia en nuestro viaje a África están haciendo un viaje similar al rededor de Australia este año y estuvimos muy tentados a comprarles su vehículo al final del viaje, sin embargo esto requiere algunas modificaciones por el tipo de preferencias de camping que tenemos, -esto fue muy atractivo... sin embargo, evaluamos si podríamos modificar nuestro actual vehículo y enviarlo a Australia para el viaje, cuando recibimos las cotizaciones de modificación y envío fue claro que esta era la mejor opción.

·      What are the climatic considerations – when should we plan to be where? /
Cuáles son las consideraciones climáticas que debemos tener en cuenta? cuándo debemos planear estar en cada sitio?

• In short, it was obvious that we should avoid the central región of the country during the summer, the north of the country during cyclone season, and Tasmania in winter. More detailed analysis gave us insight into the ideal times for everywhere in the country, which we have applied to the route planning stage of our planning.
• Rapidamente, fue obvio que debíamos evitar la región central del país durante el verano, el norte del país durante la estación de huracanes y Tasmania en invierno ,un análisis más detallado nos dio conciencia sobre los momentos ideales para cada lugar en el país, que aplicamos en la Planeación de nuestro del caso base.
  
  

·      Where should we start (and finish)?/Cuándo debemos comenzar y finalizar?

• It made sense to plan on starting in a big city, to which flights would probably be enough to find reasonable ticket prices, and where it would be preferable to undertake final vehicle preparation, arrange insurance, etc. Later in planning, another consideration was to choose a port to which our vehicle could be shipped most practically and economically.  At present it looks as if Brisbane meets the requirements best. 
• Nos hizo sentido comenzar en una ciudad grande  para la cual sea más probable encontrar mejores precios para los tiquetes aéreos y donde podamos realizar los ajustes finales del carro, asi como organizar los relativos en los seguros. Más tarde en la planeación, otras consideraciones fueron escoger el puerto en que nuestro vehículo podría ser enviado buscando que fuera más práctico y más económico, al parecer Brisbane cumple con estos criterios. 

·      Security and Visas / Seguridad y Visas

• We looked into security, as we do for this type of trip (indeed for any trip) and it was no surprise to confirm that Australia is a country in which security concerns are low on the risk matrix. Visas also appear to be easily obtained, although we always have to consider the potential for surprises the information available indicates that visas should not present a challenge. 
• Revisamos los asuntos de seguridad como lo hemos hecho para este tipo de viajes, realmente para cada viaje, y no fuera sorpresa confirmar que Asutralia es un país en el cual los asuntos de seguridad son bajos en la matriz de riesgo, las visas parecen ser fáciles de obtener, sin embargo siempre tenemos que considerar el potencial de sorpresas. La información disponible indica que las visas pueden no representar ningún desafio.
  

So, it’s now mid-November, we have identified our destinations in Australia (always aware that we may add or subtract some once on the road), and have “joined the dots” from an assumed starting point of Brisbane as far as Northern Queensland, with further work to be done to finalise the route from Cape York along the east coast to Melbourne, to visit Tasmania, and then to return to Brisbane.

Bueno es ahora la mitad de noviembre hemos identificado nuestros destinos es Australia , siempre conscientes qué haremos adiciones o quitaremos algunos de ellos de la ruta, hemos unido los puntos asumiendo como punto de inicio Brisbane hasta el norte de Queens Land, en el futuro tenemos que finalizar la ruta desde Cape York a través de la costa este hasta Melbourne, para luego visitar Tasmania y regresar a Brisbane.

We have committed to doing the modifications to the car here in Bogotá, in two categories:

·      Mechanical and Electrical – suspension, winch, snorkel, roof rack and fuel rack, refrigerator, additional electrical outlets, antennæ, sand flag, water tank, etc.

·      Interior modifications – storage lockers, bed, refrigerator drawer, “kitchen”, etc.

Estamos comprometidos con hacer las modificaciones en Bogotá, en dos categorias:

Mecánicos y eléctricos: suspensión, malacate,  tubo respirador, Parrilla de techo y para combustible, instalaciones eléctricas adicionales, antena, bandera de arena, tanque de agua.
Modificaciones interiores: me pones de almacenamiento camas, dispositivo para el refrigerador, cocina.

The plan is to receive everything needed by late in the year, and to undertake the modifications in December and January. All being well, the target date to have the vehicle in Brisbane is some time in February (to be refined), to allow us to be “on the road” early in March.

En plan en recibir todo lo necesario para el final de año y emprender las modificaciones entre diciembre y enero. Hecho todo, la meta es tener el vehículo en Brisbane en algún momento de febrero, para permitirnos estar en ruta al inicio de marzo.

We have completed the “base case” itinerary (flexible of course). Assuming a departure from Brisbane in March, we head southwards through Southern Queensland and New South Wales, stopping in Sydney, and then heading west via Canberra and into South Australia, although by-passing Melbourne (to be visited later in the trip), thence westwards along the coast to Perth, arriving some time in May. After which north to Broome, taking the Gibb River Highway, then to Darwin, to arrive in June. From Darwin east and then south into the “Red Centre” visiting Uluru and then crossing the Simpson Desert to Birdsville. Then northwards towards Cape York, with the intention of taking the “Old Telegraph Track” leading into the península. This will put us at Cape York in August. We have yet to complete planning for the remainder of the trip, however the general plan is to work our way southwards, returning to Brisbane, and then heading further south to Melbourne, spending some time in Tasmania, and then finally returning to Brisbane prior to leaving for home.

Hemos completado el caso base, asumiendo que iniciamos desde Brisbane, iremos hacia el sur, a través del sur de Queensland y New South Wales, para luego movernos en dirección occidental a Camberra, pero evitando Melbourne (que visitaremos más adelante en el viaje). Seguiremos la costa hasta Perth, llegando en algún momento de mayo. Después iremos al norte hasta Broome, tomando la ruta del Río Gibb, luego a Darwin, inicialmente al este y luego al sur, para visitar el centro rojo, Uluru y posteriormente, cruzar el desierto Simpson hasta Birdsville. Una vez más en dirección norte con la intención de tomar el viejo camino del telégrafo, para ir a la península, esto nos pondrá en Cape York,. Regresar a Brisbane por la costa este, luego ir hacia el sur a Melbourne, pasar un tiempo en Tasmania, antes de regresar de nuevo a casa.

This is obviously a general outline, and we plan on visiting many National Parks, Reserves, and sites of interest, as well as visiting friends and family along the way.

Obviamente, es un Esquema general, planeamos visitar muchos parques naturales, reservas y sitios de interés, así como visitar amigos y familiares en el camino.
