Luego de un sorpresiva noticia recibimos el carro el lunes al límite del día hábil, nos sorprendió porque el viernes anterior nos informaron que habían restricciones de personal en el área de inspección sanitaria, lo que podría representar una espera de cuatro días después de abierto el contenedor, así que las noticias no eran alentadoras, sin embargo en nuestra llamada de rutina del lunes, para hacer seguimiento, nos informaron que el carro pasaría a inspección ese día y 30 minutos después nos indicaron que habíamos pasado la inspección sin necesidad de cuarentena o fumigación (todo el esfuerzo de limpieza valió la pena). Así que ahora tendríamos que esperar unas horas para terminar los trámites y recoger el carro en el lugar de almacenamiento.

After receiving Surprising news we received the car on Monday at the end of the working day, it was surprising because on the previous Friday we had been told that there were limited staff available in the quarantine division which could represent a wait of four more days after the opening of the container, to avoid setting optimistic expectations. However on our routine call on Monday to follow up we were told that the car had passed inspection that day and 30 minutes later that there was no need for quarantine or fumigation (all of which justified the effort taken to clean the car before departure). Hence all we had to do was to wait a few hours for the formalities to be completed and receive the car at the port.


Salimos a las 4:30 pm de las bodegas, con dirección al aeropuerto, Alan en un carro y yo en el nuestro, estábamos a solo 6 km del lugar de retorno de carros alquilados, pronto ambos nos preguntamos porque la ruta nos llevaba al centro de la ciudad, sin opción de comunicarnos, seguimos las instrucciones, hasta completar 21 kilómetros, y 2:00 horas manejando por la ciudad, recorrimos las colinas en la hora de mayor tráfico y nos pudimos hacer una idea más amplia de los barrios de la ciudad, por cierto bella ciudad.


We left the depot at 1630h in the direction of the airport, Alan in one vehicle and Marce in the other, Alan following instructions from an app. We were only 6 Km from the rental car return location and soon were asking ourselves (independently) why the road we were taking was headed towards the centre of the city; we had no way of communicating since we were both driving. We followed the instructions until we completed 21 Km in two hours driving through the centre of the city at rush hour...

Junto con el carro llegaron dos días de organización, ajustarlo todo, poner cada cosa un su lugar, o al menos en un lugar, asegurar los pequeños detalles que hacen la diferencia, disfrutar las últimas cenas con Emma y Gaz, para salir hacia el sur.

Now that we had the car we spent two days in organisation: adjusting everything, putting everything in its place, or at least in a place, taking care of the small details which make the difference. We enjoyed our last dinners with Emma and Gaz, prior to leaving for the south.

Nos dirigimos a Belliger, por una ruta sinuosa y llena de parajes atractivos, usamos parte del tiempo en Bangalow, un pequeño pueblo que conserva el aire antiguo de sus edificaciones, con una atmósfera vibrante contemporánea, que invita a recorrer sus calle, husmear la tiendas y dejarse tentar por los productos locales. Llegamos a Bellingen al final del día, pero aún con luz, las tiendas principales estaban cerradas y las luces de los bares y restaurantes titilaban en contraste con el cielo, después de caminar con calma y observar la arquitectura local, saciamos nuestras ganas con cerveza local, pizza, música country y la mezcla de visitantes del lugar esa noche. Al día siguiente una nueva cara del lugar se manifestó, gente amable y cálida por todas partes, pequeños cafés como lugares de encuentro para desayunar y tiendas curiosas para atender las diferentes necesidades.

We headed to Bellingen, on winding roads full of attractive stops, stopping for a while in Bangalow, a small town which retains an antique air in its buildings, combined with a vibrant contemporary atmosphere, watching the fights want to walk the streets check the shops and enjoy the local products. We arrived in Bellingen at the end of the day, although it was still light the shops were closed and the lights in the bars and restaurants twinkled in contrast to the sky.  After wandering around a little and observing the local architecture, we satiated our thirst and hunger with local beer, accompanied by country music, and enjoyed the variety of visitors in the pub. The following day the place manifested a different face, friendly people everywhere, small cafés as meeting places for breakfast, and interesting shops to attend various necessities.

El bosque en Dorigo National Park / Forest

Exploramos y dormimos en Dorrigo National Park, fue un día lluvioso, pero aún con la lluvia, pudimos explorar el bosque, nos encontramos con lo que yo llamé un bosque peludo, árboles altos cuyos troncos están cubiertos por helechos en las partes más bajas y Photis Vine, un una enredadera, que cubre los troncos haciendo el paisaje del bosque un hermoso tapiz verde de múltiples tonos. Después pudimos apreciar la amplia vista desde el mirador principal, que rápidamente volvía a cubrirse con la niebla. Exploramos Danga Falls, La Luz del sol al final del día, iluminaba las rocas de las paredes de la cascada, dejando ver las formaciones rocosas,  en el camino, avistamos por primera vez Galah, dos especímenes tomando los últimos rayos del sol en un eucalipto decadente.

Dorigo National Park

We explored and then slept in Dorrigo National Park, it was a rainy day, but even with the rain, we could explore the woods; we encountered what we would call a hairy wood, tall trees whose trunks were covered with ferns in their lower parts and Photis vines in a tangle which covered the trunks making the view of the wood a beautiful green carpet of multiple tones. We were able to appreciate a wide vista from the principal viewpoint, which rapidly became covered with mist. We explored Dangar Falls, lit by the sun at the end of the day illuminating the rocky walls at the waterfall, letting us see the formations. On the way there we saw for the first time Galah, two specimens taking the last rays of the sun on a decaying eucalyptus.

El atardecer fue deliciosos, la apertura del paisaje que invita al vacío fue interrumpida múltiples veces por los cantos de los lorikeets, las cacatuas blancas  de cresta amarilla y los magpie; con la oscuridad, fueron el viento y la lluvia los responsable de la música nocturna. Luego de nuestra primera cena al aire libre y una ducha caliente, pasamos nuestra primera noche en el carro, la temperatura descendió rápidamente, lo que nos ayudó a disfrutar aún más el pequeño espacio disponible. Al amanecer, la lluvia y el viento no fueron muy amigables, pero nos ayudaron a salir del sitio rápidamente y volver a Bellingen por un desayuno caliente. Continuamos al sur por la costa hasta port MacQuery para hacernos una idea del lugar, definitivamente tendremos que volver allí, el contraste de playas y bosques costeros nos resultaron muy atractivos.

Cocinando / Cooking

The sunset was delicious, the tranquil setting interrupted many times by the songs of the lorikeets, the sulphur cockatoos, and the magpies; with darkness came the wind and the rain which were responsible for that night’s music. We then enjoyed our first dinner in the open air, and a hot shower, passing our first night in the car. The temperature fell rapidly, which helped us to enjoy even more the limited space available. At dawn the rain and the wind were not particularly friendly, but helped us to leave the place quickly and return to Bellingen for a hot breakfast. We continued to the south along the coast to Port Macquarie which was an ideal place, we will definitely have to return there, the contrast of beach and wood along the coast is very attractive.

Continuamos el camino hacia Pacific Palms, allí nos encontramos con las primas de Alan y sus familias directas, y como si nos conociéramos desde siempre comenzaron las conversaciones de reconocimiento y remembranza. Kirstie y Michel nos recibieron en su casa, con ellos, Dani y Sophi, pasamos un fin de semana inolvidable. Disfrutamos los paisajes del área, la playa y el mar, los lagos interiores y la belleza natural alrededor -el domingo inició con la imagen y el canto de una Kukaburrra posada en la baranda de cuarto, con ella dos más en los árboles aledaños y mientras las observábamos, lorikeets, rosellas y king  Parrots hicieron su aparición ruidosa e incitadora- todo se completó con la divertida presencia de Michel que no solo nos deleitó con sus delicioso cerdo y pollo asado lentamente al fuego abierto, sino que modeló para nosotros sus pantalones de leopardo, nos lleno la cabeza de historias maravillosas de Australia y nos aprovisionó de pijamas de Singapore Airlines para soportar el frío del invierno en el desierto... mejor imposible. Gracias a todos por la generosidad y los buenos momento que atesoramos en el alma.

We continued on our way to Pacific Palms, where we met Alan‘s cousins, whom he had not seen for many years, and their families, and got to know each other through many conversations and recollections. Kirsti and Michael received us in their home; with them, Dani, and Sophie we spent an unforgettable weekend. We enjoyed the scenery of the area - beaches, lakes, and ocean, a beautiful natural setting. Sunday started with the sight and song of a kookaburra posing on the veranda of our room, with two more in the trees close by and while we watched them, lorikeets, rosellas, and king parrots made their appearance noisily and excitedly. The day was complete with the performance of Michael, in preparing delicious barbecued pork and also modelling for everyone his leopard skin trousers, regaling us with stories of Australia, and giving us presents of Singapore Airlines (or Etihad?) pyjamas to manage the cold at night - nothing could be better. Thanks to all for their generosity and a great experience we’ll cherish in our hearts.

Los bosques de Queensland / In the Queensland forests

Hemos pasado 10 días recorriendo el paisaje de tres Parques Nacionales Springbrook, Tamborine y Lamington. Estos Parques hacen parte de paredes de un volcán que existió hace 23 millones de años y que con el paso del tiempo y la acción del agua se ha erosionado, permitiendo la existencia del paisaje actual: una gran caldera con profundos acantilados y una meseta a la cima, que alojan la selva subtropical Gondwana de Australia y hace parte de

We spent ten days exploring the scenery in three national parks: Springbrook, Tamborine, and Lamington. These parks are all situated at the rim of a volcano which existed 23 million years ago, and which with the passage of time and water have been eroded, resulting in the current environment - a wide caldera with steep cliffs and a plateau surrounding this, forested with the sub-tropical Gondwana rain forest of Australia.

Comenzamos la exploración por Springbrook, nos tomo tres días recorrer los diferentes sectores a ser explorados y hacer algunos de los senderos disponibles. En la cima los paisajes amplios, montañosos y selváticos, contrastan con la vista de los rascacielos y el océano en la costa. Las variaciones climáticas nos acompañaron, así en los días claros llenos de luz y cielo azul, pudimos apreciar la profundidad del paisaje, mientras en los días de cielos tormentosos y lluvias pudimos disfrutar de la belleza de los contrastes, el misticismo de la neblina y la aparición del arcoíris.

We started our exploration in Springbrook, taking three days to visit the different sectors of the park and to walk several of the walks available. On the heights are wide vistas, mountainous and forested, contrasting with the skyscrapers and ocean visible in the distance at the coast. Climatice variations accompanied us, such that on the days with clear blue skies, full of light we could appreciate the wide vistas, whereas on the days of rain and stormy skies we enjoyed the contrasts, mystic mists, and rainbows which appeared.

Caminar los diferentes senderos de este parque fue nutritivo no solo por su diversidad intrínseca, árboles altos y ancestrales, una inmensa variedad de especies de plantas, hongos, helechos, sino por el carácter particular de cada uno de los senderos, que nos permitió disfrutar diversas muestras de flora y faunas, así como la belleza del agua y sus cascadas. Caminando por este parque vimos nuestra primera pitón,-una masa sinuosa, de piel húmeda y  brillante con patrón marrón, e intimidante por su tamaño y la fuerza que es posible predecir- que se alejaba del sendero para desaparecer de nuestra vista, así como los bellos glossy black skinks, que parecen de otro tiempo y se esconden bajo la maleza baja, y los huidizos Pademelon pastando al borde de la ruta. En el sendero del cañón, pudimos disfrutar diversas cascadas y la generosidad de un bosque húmedo, que nos llenó de estímulos en cada paso, más hacia el sur, el paisaje se amplía en el mirador “the best of all”, que hace honor s su nombre, para después gozar la inmensidad de las acacias antiguas en Natural Bridge.


Walking the different trails in this park was fulfilling, not only in their intrinsic diversity, with tall ancestral trees, an immense variety of species of plants, fungi, and ferns, but also in the particular character of each one of the trails, which allowed us to enjoy various different examples of the flora and fauna, as well as the beauty of the streams and waterfalls, Walking through this park we saw our first carpet python, a sinuous mass with glistening skin and brown pattern, intimidating by its size and strength, as appeared evident by the ease with which it distanced itself from the trail and disappeared. Also we saw beautiful black skinks, appearing to be from a different era, and which hid below the low brush. We saw timid pademelons grazing at the roadside. In the Canyon Trail we could enjoy several different cascades and rich rain forest, filling us with stimuli at every step. Further south a wider vista was revealed at the “Best of All Viewpoint” which justifies its name, after which we enjoyed the immensity of the ancient acacias at Natural Bridge.

En Lamington, visitamos dos áreas Binna Burra y Green Mountain, en la primera una ruta sinuosa nos llevó a lo alto de la meseta, para disfrutar el paisaje y los vuelos de los parapentistas, ya en el parque las vista del cañón y las cuevas del sendero nos ocuparon, allí encontramos los singulares panales de avispas, que en la foto parecen un liquen pero que en realidad es una estructura viva de al menos dos metros cuadrados de área y gran diversidad de hongos líquenes y parajes tranquilos para contemplar.
En Green Mountain, disfrutamos de bosques de árboles altos, llenos de sombras, las vistas amplias del Valle y los pajaros, con el amanecer el reboloteo y los nuevos cantos nos sacaron del sueño, pudimos avistar gran variedad y disfrutar los cambios de La Luz con el amanecer. Luego salimos a pajariar disfrutando el humor del guía, que no se calló por un minuto, tuvimos un encuentro con la fauna local y luego pudimos apreciar el vuelo y aprender de los hábitos de diferentes aves rapaces.

In Lamington we visited two areas - Binna Burra and Green Mountain. In the first a sinuous route led us to the top of the plateau where we could appreciate the scenery and the flight of the parapentists. Soon we were enjoying the views of the canyon and the caves, with a singular wasp nest hanging from the cave wall, which in the photographs appears to be lichen but which in reality is an area of several square metres. There was a great diversity of fungi, lichens, and scenes rich in flora to contemplate.

In Green Mountain we enjoyed the tall forest, full of shadows, the wide views of the valley, and the birds. With the dawn came a flurry of birds and their many songs waking us to appreciate the changing light of the dawn. Soon after we rose to go birdwatching with the local guide, with his non-stop dry humour, to encounter the local fauna; later we were able to learn of the bits of flight of local raptors.





En Tamborine, primero exploramos el pueblo, una calle larga llena de pequeñas tiendas y cafés, con productos locales, allí no solo conocimos las rocas Zebra del Sur de Australia, sino que recibimos una regalo en Zebra Stone, también disfrutamos los vinos, las artesanías locales y los turistas chinos que  suben y bajan de sus buses, buscando algo más para comprar. Luego a caminar por la montaña, exploramos un sendero por la copa de los árboles, una colección hermosa de palmeras y la belleza de las quebradas en el paisaje.

In Tamborine, first we explored the town, a long street falloff small stores and cafés, with local products, where not only were we introduced to the South Australian Zebra Stone but also received a gift of Zebra Stone. We also enjoyed wines, local artesania, and the Chinese tourists getting off and on their tour ‘buses looking from something else to buy. Later we went to walk in the mountain, exploring a trail through the forest canopy, a beautiful collection of palms, and the beauty of the mountain streams.

Completamos la experiencia natural con una nueva vista a Brisbane, exploramos las  galerías de arte enfocada en arte aborigen, que para nosotros resultó muy impactante, así como algunos artistas australianos contemporáneos. Y mas al sur, en Broadbeach para ver el campeonato estatal de salvavidas y Byron Bay, un paraíso de playa, activo, lleno de viajeros y de pájaros que al anochecer vuelven a sus nidos creando una nube de cantos que silencian cualquier acción humana.

We completed our natural experience with another view of Brisbane, exploring the art galleries with a focus on Aboriginal art, which was very striking for us, particular with respect to the contemporary artists. Further south, at Broad Beach, we watched the State Surf Life-saving Championships, and we also visited Byron Bay, a beach paradise, active, full of travellers and birds which at dusk took to the air to roost creating a cloud of song silencing any human activity.

Un comienzo lento / A slow start

Después la inevitable carrera de los meses de enero y febrero terminando las adaptaciones del carro, su envío y la preparación de todos los detalles necesarios para nuestro viaje finalmente salimos de Colombia.

After the inevitable hurry during the previous months, finishing the car adaptations, its shipping, and managing the details for our trip, we finally left Colombia.

Como resultado de las buenas coincidencias de la vida, el cambio de ritmo fue dramático, de no contar con un minuto en el día, pasamos a tener tiempo y espacio para disfrutar los amigos, el entorno, y la suerte. Parte del cambio se explica por el cansancio, -estabamos exhaustos- , otra parte por el deseo de disfrutar los encuentros y la parte que no esperábamos jugara en la ecuación es que el carro aún no ha llegado a Brisbane, está en Sidney pero aún no ha embarcado hacia este puerto. Esta nueva circunstancia además de demandar el concebido ajuste del plan, nos permite explorar con calma y detalle la vida en la Costa de oro, hemos recorrido diferentes parques y reservas, disfrutado la diversidad de pájaros, explorado el paisaje urbano de las playas dedicadas al surfing, indagado los mercados y las prácticas locales de la población y lo más importante nos hemos conectado con la familia -Gaz & Emma- que amablemente nos recibieron en su casa,  con ellos la exploración es deliciosa, porque además de buenas historias, recuerdos compartidos y nuevos por construir, el vino, la buena comida, las nuevas cervezas y las expresiones “australianas” siempre están presentes.

As a result of the good fortunes of life, the change of rhythm was dramatic: from no time at all to do anything other than preparation, to having time to enjoy friends, the environment, and fortune . Partially the change is explained by our tiredness, partially by our wish to enjoy time with others, and partially (this was not planned in the equation), because our car has not arrived until now, the container is in Sydney, we hope today it will be shipped to Brisbane. This new circumstance, in addition to requiring an adjustment to the plan, also and importantly allowed us to explore with calm and in detail the style of life in the Gold Coast, we walked through parks and natural reserves, enjoying the diversity of birds, exploring the urban landscapes in the surfing beaches, explored the markets and learned the local customs; the most important thing has been to connect again with family, Gaz & Emma, who kindly received us in their home: exploring is delicious with them, in addition to telling stories, relating old memories and building new ones, wine, food, new beer (for us), Australian slang and laughs are always present.

Dedicamos el primer día a explorar el Museo de arte moderno y la galería de arte de Queensland, una exquisita exhibición en la Trienal de arte del Asia y el pacífico, nos reveló un nuevo código artístico, nuevas formas, colores e historias comenzaron a surgir y con ellas las múltiples preguntas que hacen este viaje tan estimulante. Pudimos disfrutar el ambiente urbano alrededor del río, así como la presencia de niños y jóvenes en las galerías de arte. Nos dirigimos hacia el sur hacia la famosa costa de oro una línea costera famosa por el surfing, donde es fácil contagiarse con el estado de ánimo relajado de los australianos: sandalias, pantalones cortos y camisetas sueltas se vuelven mandatorias, no solo por ser el código de vestuario, sino porque la temperatura así lo exige.

We spend our first day exploring GOMA (the Gallery of Modern Art) and QAG (the Queensland Art Gallery), an exquisite exhibition in the Asian Pacific Triennial, which revealed a new art code; new shapes, colours, and stories started to appear and with them the questions which made this trip so stimulating. We enjoyed the urban style on the river bank adjacent to these galleries, as well as the presence of children and young people in the galleries themselves. We then went south to the Gold Coast, a coastline famous for its surfing beaches, where it was easy to be infected with the relaxing mood of Australians: flip flops, shorts, and T-shirts were mandatory, not also in terms of the dress code, but also from the perspective of the climate.

Currumbin es una pequeña ciudad al sur de la costa de oro, rodeada de reservas naturales centros de conservación de vida salvaje y mucho verde que atrae cientos de pájaros cada mañana, haciendo el despertar un momento de curiosidad instantánea, es inevitable salir a mirar hacia arriba, para encontrarse con una nueva cacatúa, Rainbow lorikeet, ibis blanco o el hermoso vuelo del pelícano australiano. Visitamos los centros de conservación de vida salvaje aledaños, siendo posible conocer animales que no sabía que existían, así como otros que ya estaban en el radar, y es un placer observarlos y apreciarlos, junto con la maravillosa vegetación, llena de árboles altos y frondosos, en donde cada especie encuentra un lugar apropiado para camuflarse -es valiosos visitar: Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and David Fleay Wildlife Park y Burleigh Head National Park.
Currumbin is a small city in the southern part of the Gold Coast, surrounded by wildlife conservation centres and natural reserves, a very green environment which attracts hundreds of birds every morning, making waking a moment of instant curiosity - it’s compulsory to go outside to see to the sky, to meet a new cockatoo, the beautiful rainbow lorikeet, a white ibis, or the beautiful flight of the Australian pelican. We visited the nearby wildlife conservation centre, we encountered animals new to us and could appreciate them in a natural environment full of tall and luxuriant trees, in which each species finds an appropriate place to camouflage itself - it is worth visiting the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, the David Fleay Wildlife Park, and Burleigh Head National Park.

Currumbin creek y Tallebudgera Creek, constituyen dos áreas ricas de explorar, no solo por la belleza natural de las entradas de agua al mar y la vegetación circundante, sino también por las dinámicas sociales: personas de todas las edades disfrutan la vida acuática, el ambiente es tranquilo y vibrante, cada quien esta enfocado en sacar el mayor provecho de estar en el agua, nadar, refrescarse y disfrutar las opciones recreacionales, para luego explorar los multiples senderos alrededor que permiten experimentar los amplios paisajes de mar.

Australian Flamingo

Currumbin Creek y Tallebudgera Creek are two rich areas not only for their natural beauty and ecosystem, but also for the social dynamics: there are people of all ages enjoying the aquatic life, the ambiance is vibrant and relaxed, everyone is focussed on maximising the value of the water, swimming, cooling off, and enjoying different activities. Additionally it’s possible to walk around the many paths to experience the wide sea landscapes.

Más al sur, el paisaje sigue verde y vistoso, visitamos Murwillumbah, para explorar Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Center, un centro de arte preciosos, que nos permitió explorar artistas contemporáneos y disfruta el paisaje montañoso de las serranías circundantes, que contrasta con poblados pintorescos en la costa como Kingcliffs y Brunswick Heads, perfectos para el ocio, por lo que que tendremos que volver a ellos.

Further south, the world continues green, we visited Murwillumbah to visit the Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre, a gorgeous art centre with wonderful architecture and a great collection, a new contemporary artist for our enjoyment and a beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, which contrast with the charming towns on the seaside - Kingscliffe and Brunswick Heads, full of options to be lazy, which is a good reason to return.

En términos más logísticos, hemos conseguido todos los elementos pendientes, la oferta es amplia, especialmente en productos outdoor, a pesar de ello fue positivo traer lo que elegimos traer, porque los precios locales para los mismos productos son más altos. Así que estamos listos!

In logistic terms, we have been able to acquire all the remaining items we need; even though the market in outdoor items is huge, we confirmed that had been a good idea to bring the things that we brought from home, because the local prices for these are higher. So we are ready!
