Nullarbor: different from expectations

“Crossing the Nullarbor: the key syllable is “bor(e)””. It’s 1675 Km of nothing, one hears. This was not our experience.

“Cruzar el Nullarbor: la silaba importante es “bor(e)”” -Aburridor-. Son 1675 km de nada, es lo que se oye decir. Esa no fue nuestra experiencia.

Lake McDonnell

We left Ceduna after visiting the excellent Art Gallery where we chatted with Brenda and learned about her art and story. An early stop was Lake McDonnell, which is well known for the striking colour difference between the waters on either side of the causeway which leads to the coast. Nearing our first night stop at the imaginatively named Nullarbor Roadhouse we chose to take a minor track which appears on google maps and leads to the “Head of Bight” through the dunes behind the coast. We did enjoy travelling through the bush and along the dune front, although we finally found ourselves on the road leading down to the “Head of Bight”, we had managed to arrive on the wrong side of a closed gate, and so returned to the main road via further minor tracks.

Dejamos Ceduna, después de visitar la galería de arte aborigen, que en nuestro concepto es excelente. Allí hablamos con Brenda y aprendimos acerca de su historia y su trabajo artístico. Muy cerca de allí nuestra primera parada fue en el lago McDonnell, bien conocido por la diferencia de colores de las aguas a ambos lados de las ruta que lo cruza y conduce a la costa. Al acercarnos a nuestra primera parada nocturna en Nullarbor Roadhouse - cuyo nombre demandó mucha creatividad-, decidimos tomar una pequeña carretera que aparece en google maps y lleva al “Head of Bight" a través de las dunas detrás de la costa. Disfrutamos viajando a través del monte y a lo largo del frente de las dunas, finalmente nos encontramos en la carretera  principal que conduce a "Head of Bightt", nos las arreglamos para llegar al lado equivocado de un portón cerrado, y así nos toco buscar como regresar a la Carretera principal a través de otras rutas menores, ahora conscientes de estar circulando por territorio con acceso restringido.

We camped at the above-mentioned roadhouse; typical of a series of these across the Nullarbor, which are more or less the only places which provide fuel, food, drink, and supplies along the highway, and which offer accommodation including camping facilities. The roadhouse is a “one stop shop” in the complete sense. The camping facilities are fairly basic however the presence of a place to eat something and have a drink at the end of a long day’s drive make the overall roadhouse experience positive.

Acampamos en la casa de carretera antes mencionada; una muestra típica de una serie de estas a lo largo del Nullarbor, que son más o menos los únicos lugares que proporcionan combustible, alimentos, bebidas y suministros a lo largo de la carretera, y que ofrecen alojamiento que incluye instalaciones para acampar. La casa de ruta es una "ventanilla única" en el sentido completo. Las instalaciones para acampar son bastante básicas, sin embargo, la presencia de un lugar para comer algo y tomar una copa al final de un largo día de viaje hace que la experiencia general de la casa rodante sea positiva.

In the morning we returned to Head of Bight and walked the viewpoints in the hope of seeing passing whales and other marine life. We saw no whales here however saw a group of dolphins in the waters below the cliffs. This part of the coast is relatively flat at some altitude above mean sea level, with precipitous cliffs which are eroding, making the cliff edge somewhat hazardous, although with excellent views out to sea. We crossed the border into Western Australia that day, passing the quarantine check and the “Border Village” which is simply another roadhouse. That night was spent at another roadhouse (Mundrabilla).

Por la mañana volvimos a Head of Bight y recorrimos los miradores con la esperanza de ver ballenas y otras especies marinas. No vimos ballenas aquí, sin embargo vimos un grupo de delfines en las aguas debajo de los acantilados. Esta parte de la costa es relativamente plana a cierta altitud sobre el nivel medio del mar, con precipicios escarpados que se erosionan, lo que hace que el borde del acantilado sea algo peligroso, aunque con excelentes vistas al mar. Cruzamos la frontera hacia Australia Occidental ese día, pasando el control de cuarentena y la "Aldea Fronteriza", que es simplemente otra casa de carretera. Esa noche la pasamos en otra casa de carretera (Mundrabilla).

More Dolphins

The following day we reached Madura where the road ascends an escarpment which runs parallel to the coast, offering a change in scenery, which is welcome after two days on the lower, flatter, eastern part of the Nullarbor, although it should be noted that we were very interested in the flora and fauna throughout the crossing, so that we were not bored at all. After a further mbali kidogo (see unochoenafrica.blogpsot.com for an explanation) we reached the turnoff for Eyre Bird Observatory, which we had identified as worth a visit while travelling west.

Al día siguiente, llegamos a Madura, donde el camino asciende por una escarpe que discurre paralelo a la costa, ofreciendo un cambio en el paisaje, que es bienvenido después de dos días en la parte más baja y plana del este del Nullarbor, aunque se debe tener en cuenta que estábamos muy interesados en la flora y fauna a lo largo del cruce, por lo que no estábamos aburridos en absoluto. Después de otro mbali kidogo (consulte unochoenafrica.blogpsot.com para obtener una explicación) llegamos al desvío para el Observatorio de Aves de Eyre, que habíamos identificado como digno de una visita mientras viajábamos hacia el oeste.

It was about an hour and a half off the main road, initially on a gravel track and then after dropping down the escarpment through sandy dunes to the old telegraph station in which the observatory is now established. We were met by Steve and Mandy, who were managing the place, and introduced to John and Lillian who were staying there. The place has accommodation for guests, and after little thought we realised that it would be an excellent opportunity to stay there that night. After receiving a positive response to our question whether a room was available, we settled into a very pleasant stay, during which we walked around one of the trails, watched for birds, relaxed, and enjoyed an excellent “home cooking” dinner with conversation to match. Before leaving the next day we drove down to the beach and also, to our delight, saw Major Mitchell’s Cockatoos in the garden, taking advantage of the pond water.

 El observatorio esta a aproximadamente una hora y media de la carretera principal, inicialmente en una pista de grava y luego, después de bajar por la escarpe a través de dunas de arena, a la antigua estación de telégrafos en la que ahora está establecido el observatorio. Allí conocimos a Steve y Mandy, quienes estaban administrando el lugar, quienes nos presentaron a John y Lillian que se alojaban allí. El lugar tiene alojamiento para huéspedes, y después de poco pensar nos dimos cuenta de que sería una excelente oportunidad para permanecer allí esa noche. We then continued west, stopping at Cocklebiddy Roadhouse and then reaching Balladonia. Most (apparently all) traffic continues west on the main highway to Norseman before turning either southwest or northwest; we chose the third alternative, leaving Balladonia on the evocatively named Balladonia Road, southwest towards Cape Arid. During the next 150 Km we saw no other vehicles at all, and only three or four in the following 50 Km. The first 150 Km were gravel road, initially rocky however improving after the first 70 Km, and we saw little other than a small group of wild camels - our first time in Australia. We stopped at the Condingup Tavern for dinner, since this would last opportunity that evening for a restaurant meal, which we thought would be good plan since it was now raining and dark.

Continuamos hacia el oeste, parando en Cocklebiddy Roadhouse y luego en Balladonia. Our selected campsite proved to be closed; another nearby was accessible only via a difficult track (perhaps no problem in daylight, but uninviting in the dark and rain), and we chose to camp in a parking place at Duke of Orleans Bay, which had toilets, and in the morning proved to be a beautiful spot, set in front of the bay, with access to two beaches, where we walked along before heading back to the tavern for breakfast.

El campamento que habíamos seleccionado estaba cerrado; otro cercano solo era accesible por una ruta difícil (tal vez no tanto con la luz del día, pero poco atractivo en la oscuridad y la lluvia), así que decidimos acampar en un lugar de estacionamiento con baño en Duke of Orleans Bay, por la mañana descubrimos un hermoso lugar, ubicado frente a la bahía, con acceso a dos playas, por donde caminamos antes de regresar a la taberna para el desayuno.

Our passage through the Eyre Peninsula / Nuestro paso por la península de Eyre

 May 9-12

We started our trip to Eyre peninsula with a few raindrops at 7:00 am, just in time to get out of the car, 30 min later we were preparing our breakfast in a rainstorm, this was the pattern for this section of the trip. Our first stop was in the Arid Botanic Gardens, in Augusta. We spent most of the time drinking tea while we waited for a reduction in the rain. Finally at 11:00 am only small showers were continuing so Marce decided to explore, dressed in her waterproof jacket.

Comenzamos nuestro viaje por la península de Eyre con gotas de lluvia a las 7:00 am, justo a tiempo para dejar el carro, 30 min después estábamos bajo una tormenta preparando nuestro desayuno, este detalle del clima marcaría esta sección del viaje. Nuestra primera parada en Augusta, sería en el Jardín Botánico de las tierras áridas. Gastamos el mayor tiempo posible tomando te mientras esperábamos la reducción de la lluvia, finalmente a las 11:00 solo había llovizna, así que decidí explorar el parque vestida con mi impermeable.

The botanic garden was impressive, with a great collection of plants representing different arid ecosystems, and also a collection of birds enjoying the rain: from a seated emu to an Australian Magpie taking a bath with indescribable pleasure.

El Jardín Botánico fue impresionante, un gran colección de planas representativas de los diferentes ecosistemas áridos del estado, pero también una colección de pájaros disfrutando la lluvia: desde el emu sentado y poco dispuesta a moverse, hasta un Magpie Australiana tomando un baño con un placer indescriptible.

After a hot soup we continued south, the wind was strong the whole trip and there wasn’t much to explore in the conditions of the day: freezing. We arrived in Port Lincoln in time to find a place to sleep and arrived in dry conditions. Next day we were dropping the car off to replace the windshield, which had been cracked by a flying stone the day before. After that, having rented a small car, we explored Port Lincoln National Park in a intermittently rainy day; great landscapes, a lot of birds, and pleasant trails - we imagine that it would be a wonderful destination on a sunny day.

Después de una sopa caliente continuamos hacia el sur, el viento estuvo fuerte todo el viaje y no mucho que explorar con las condiciones del clima: helado. Llegamos a Port Lincoln con tiempo suficientes para conseguir un lugar para dormir y llegar cuando no llovía. El día siguiente, dejamos el carro en el taller para reemplace el parabrisas, que se había quebrado el día anterior con una piedra, después es un pequeño carro alquilado, exploramos Port Lincoln National Park en un día con aguaceros intermitentes, encontramos hermosos paisajes, muchos pájaros y senderos placenteros, debe ser un destino fabuloso en un día soleado.

We spent the next night in Coffin Bay, a place famous for oyster production; they were outstanding, so our visit focussed around eating oysters, and for the first time in our lives we had oysters for breakfast!

Pasamos la noche en Coffin Bay, un lugar famosos por la producción de ostras, que fueron excepcionales, así que nuestras visita se centro en comer ostras y por primera vez en nuestras vidas tuvimos ostras al desayuno!

After learning that the weather would not improve for the next three days, we went north along the west coast; we enjoyed a scenic drive to explore the cliffs, they were wild, improved by local artwork, and by the contributions of travellers.

Después de saber que el clima no mejoraría en los siguientes tres días, fuimos al norte de nuevo a través de la costa occidental, disfrutamos la ruta para explorar los arrecifes que fueron salvajes y mejorados con la exhibición de arte local, y con la colección de viajeros haciendo los mismo que nosotros.

The Great Ocean Tourist Drive

To complete our exploration we visited Gawler Rangers, to the north of Eyre peninsula; the trip connected us again with more remote areas, once we left the main road, there were no more people on the road and our camp site was empty. On the way a very particular art work took our attention - a collection of bras hanging on a fence.

Para completar nuestra exploración, visitamos Gawler Rangers, al norte de la peninsula, el viaje nos conectó de nuevo con las áreas mas remotas, una vez dejamos la ruta principal no mas gente en la ruta, y el campamento elegido estaba vacío, en la ruta una obra de arte muy particular nos llamó la antención: un conjunto de braseros colgando de una cerca.

Gawler Ranges Outcrops

The park has a amazing collection of outcrops breaking through the grasslands: two places had a special interest: Kolay Mirica Falls  and the Organ Pipe. We started with Kolay Mirica Falls, it was very close on the map, so very soon we parked the car in a small bay on the main road and we walked to the rocks, there was a water course, so we walked up the river bed and enjoyed the shapes of the rocks, however we noticed that the reality was very different from the information we had, so Marce decided to climb to the top of the gorge, since it was possible that the main structure was more remote. After several encounters with kangaroos, some small mammals, and two goat skeletons, she was at the top of the falls and nothing more was visible, so she descended to finish the exploration with Alan, feeling a little disappointed.

El parque tiene una colección impresionante de afloramientos rocosos, quebrando el paisaje de pastizales, dos lugares tienen un interés especial: Kolay Mirica Falls y Organ Pipe. Comenzamos con Kolay Mirica Falls, estaba muy cerca del campamento, al menos en el mapa, entonces una vez dejamos el campamento, parqueamos de nuevo el carro en una pequeña bahía en la ruta principal y caminamos hasta la rocas, hacia una linea de agua, así que trepamos por el lecho de la caída de agua y disfrutamos las formas de las rocas, pero notamos que la realidad era diferente de la información que habíamos revisado, así que decidí trepar hasta la cima del cañon, porque era posible que la principal estructura estuviera aguas arriba, después de varios encuentros con Canguros, algún mamífero pequeño, y dos esqueletos de cabras yo estaba en la cima y nada mas estaba visible, así que descendí  para terminar la exploración con Alan, sintiéndonos un poquito desilusionados.

A few Km later, on the way to our second destination. We saw a sign indicating the entrance to the falls, obviously we had been exploring the no name fall. This place was gorgeous - a small gorge whose walls are basalt columns, and very much more accessible compared with the previous one. The route to Organ Pipe was extremely enjoyable - the rain had been nourishing the grass, so the landscape was a more vibrant green, kangaroos, wallabies, and emus were enjoying the fresh food available and this time were unwilling to run away from us.

Algunos Km después, en dirección al segundo lugar, vimos una señal indicando la entrada a la catarata, obviamente habíamos explorado la catarata sin nombre. Este lugar fue hermoso, un pequeño cañon cuyas paredes están constituidas por columnas  de basalto, y mucho mas accesible que la anterior. La ruta a Organ Pipes, fue muy divertida, la lluvia había nutrido el pasto , así el paisaje tenía un verde mas vivo, canguros, wallabies y emus asaban disfrutando la comida fresca disponible, y esta vez no estaban disponibles para correr con nuestra presencia.

Organ Pipe itself was also great; again the columns of basalt in an impressive collection were the background to a group of sandalwood trees and birds following the creek. It was a great end to our time in this famous peninsula.

Organ Pipe fue también magnifico, de nuevo un conjunto de columnas de basalto son el telar de fondo de un colección de arboles de sándalo y diferentes pajaros siguiendo la quebrada. Este fue un gran final para nuestro tiempo en esta peninsula famosa.

Cuando el paisaje habla mejor que nuestras palabras/ When the scenery talks more powerfully than our words: Flinders Ranges

After a late departure, we arrived at Hawker, a town south of Flinders Rangers National Park, just after sunset, with enough time to catch the last site in the campground; this week was the Land Cruiser convention and everything was full (and our Mitsubishi looked like a fly in milk). After setting up our campsite, we took some time to explore the local delights, which were concentrated in the restaurant of the main hotel.

Despues de una partida tardía, llegamos a Hawler, un pueblo al sur de Flinders Ranges National Park, justo despues del atardecer, justo a tiempo para coger el último sitio disponible en el campamento del lugar, en esa semana estaban realizando la convención de Land  Cruiser 4X4 y todo estaba ocupado, asi mismo nuestro Mitsubishi lucía como mosco el leche. Después de establecernos en el sitio, fuimos a explorar las delicias locales, concentradas en el bar del hotel prinicipal del lugar.

At this moment in the trip we were more aware of the impact of the weather in terms of accessibilities to this type of place, and we knew that we had only two days to explore the park before the rain, so next day we left early enough to take full advantage of our time there.

A esta altura del viaje, ya estabamos mas concientes del impacto del clima en el acceso a este tipo de lugares, y sabiamos que solo teniamos dos días para explorar el parque antes de las lluvias, asi que el siguiente día dejamos el lugar suficientemente temprano para aprovechar al máximo nuestro tiempo allá.

Soon we started to see the magnificent ranges, the largest mountains in South Australia, stretching for over 430 Km. The route is full of lookouts to appreciate the details of each view and also there are a variety of walking trails and 4WD tracks. We spent the first day exploring a big circuit to Glass Gorge, half of the Branchina Gorge Way, and The Sacred Canyon; amazing views were everywhere, and the clouds created an impressive experience; in addition we spotted dingo and the beautifil yucca flowers.

 Pronto comenzamos a ver las montañas magníficas,  son la cadena montañosa mas larga de Australia del Sur, que se extienede por 430 Km. La ruta esta llena de miradores para apreciar los detalles de cada vista, tambien hay varios senderos para caminar y rutas para explorar en 4X4. Gastamos el primer día explorando un circuito extenso hasta Glass Gorge, parte de la ruta a Brachina Gorge y el Cañon secreto, vistas hermosas en todos los lugares, adicionalmente las nubes crearon una experiencia impresionante, para completar vimos Dingo y la hermosa Yucca florecida.

Next day we went to Wilpena Pound, an amphitheatre of mountains of breathtaking beauty, not only from the geological aspect, but also for the richness of the vegetation. After that, we explored Bunyero Gorge,  Branchina Gorge and returned south on the western side of the mountains; the experience that day was as rich as on the previous one, which gave us a taste of satisfaction and fulfilment with our time there.

El siguiente día fuimos a Wilpena Pound, un anfiteatro de montañas de una belleza impresionante, no slo por los aspectos geologicos, tambien por la riqueza de la vegetacion. Despuesm exploramos los cañones Bunyeroo y Branchina y regresamos al sur por el lado occidental de las montañas. Este día fue tan rico como el anterior, y nos dejó un sabor de satisfaccion y plenitud.

Antes de nuestro arribo habíamos recibido diversa información que nos indicaba que Adelaide sería un destino interesante y lo fue, una ciudad encantadora en la que pudimos disfrutar diversos placeres. Comencemos:

Before our arrival we had received a variety of information that indicated that Adelaide would be an interesting destination and it was, a charming city in which we could enjoy various pleasures. Let's start:

Cafés por todas partes, definitivamente los cafés son parte de la vida en Adelaide, no es dificil encontrar uno para disfruta de una buena conversación, no solo están disponibles sino que realmente hay personas disfrutándolos.

Cafes everywhere: definitely cafes are part of life in Adelaide, it is not difficult to find one to enjoy a good conversation, not only are they available but there are really people enjoying them.

Central Market

El Mercado, el mercado central de la ciudad es un lugar vivo y vibrante, no solo por la disponibilidad de productos frescos, sino por el conjunto de puestos de comida y café que permiten disfrutar de una oferta particular.

The Central Market of the city is a lively and vibrant place, not only because of the availability of fresh products, but also because of the range of food and coffee stands which allow you to enjoy a particular offer.

Graffiti, el arte callejero está presente en toda la ciudad, embelleciendo los muros y creando atmósferas únicas para cada área, apreciar los murales convierte cada caminata en un tour delicioso que compensa la fatiga.

Vida nocturna, si bien no es nuestro fuerte, fue un placer disfrutar de una ciudad que sigue viva después de la 8:00, y a la cual se puede acceder caminando, restaurantes abiertos, gente en la calle disfrutando y sin dudas bares abiertos con una amplia oferta.

Nightlife, even if it is not our strength: it was a pleasure to enjoy a city that is still alive after 2000h, and which is accessible on foot; open restaurants, people on the street enjoying themselves, and without doubt open bars with a wide offer of alternatives.

Cine con vino y queso, después de dos meses pudimos disfrutar del cine, nos encontramos con una oferta de películas australianas, en adición a la posibilidad de tomar una copia de vino acompañada con queso y helado delicioso, como alternativa a las crispetas de todo lugar.

Cinema with wine and cheese; after two months we were able to enjoy the cinema - we found an offer of Australian films, in addition to the possibility of taking a glass of wine accompanied by cheese and delicious ice cream, as an alternative to the standard popcorn.

Sabores variados, no fue difícil Encontrar cómo satisfacer el paladar, las diversas influencias culturales hacen de la oferta gastronómica una delicia, así que entre comida nepali, India, coreana y australiana pasamos nuestros días.

Varied flavours: it was not difficult finding how to satisfy the palate, the diverse cultural influences make the gastronomic offer a delight, so between Nepali, Indian, Korean, and Australian food we spent our days.

Transporte público gratuito en el centro de la ciudad, varios días disfrutamos del sol y la lluvia, sin embargo, lo aguaceros no fueron razón para detenernos, el tranvía gratuito en el centro de la ciudad facilitó nuestro movimiento podíamos fácilmente cambiar de locación para disfrutar otra zona de la ciudad.

Free public transport in the city centre: for several days we enjoyed sun and rain, however the downpours were no reason to stop, the free tram in the city centre facilitated our movement - we could easily change locations to enjoy another area of ​​the city.

El centro de Adelaide está rodeado de parques, que crean un ordenamiento singular pero también un espacio limpio en el territorio, allí perdimos encontrar Corellas de pico largo, explorando el suelo y buscando semillas para su dieta. No nos alcanzó el tiempo para recorrer el Jardín Botanico, lo que representa una buena excusa para volver.

Parks, botanical garden and cycle routes. The centre of Adelaide is surrounded by parks, which create a unique order but also a clean space in the city; there we lost ourselves finding long-beaked Corellas, exploring the ground and looking for seeds for their diet. We did not have time to visit the Botanical Garden, which is a good excuse to return.

El puerto, en el puerto de Brisbane se encuentra un barco de valor histórico, así que decidimos visitar el el ruta a nuestro próximo destino. Entrando al pueblo nos encontramos con múltiples murales, después de descubrir que el próximo tour guiado, única forma de visitar el barco, era 3 horas más tarde, decidimos explorar las calles, nos encontramos con una ciudad preciosa, especialmente por la colección de grafittis, de artistas de diferentes partes del mundo.

The port: in the port of Adelaide is a ship of historical value, so we decided to visit this en route to our next destination. Entering the old town we found many murals. After discovering that the next guided tour, the only way to visit the ship, was 3 hours later, we decided to explore the streets and we found a beautiful city, especially for its collection of graffiti of artists from different parts of the world.

Fue un grandioso final, una ciudad a la que definitivamente esperamos volver para seguirla descubriendo y disfrutando.

It was a great ending, a city to which we definitely hope to return to continue discovering and enjoying it.
