The southwest of Australia, and the impact of the southwesterly fronts…

Having arrived at the south-western coast of Western Australia after crossing the Nullarbor, we found ourselves in a green, agricultural, region, with beautiful beaches and rocky promontories. Unfortunately we arrived at the same time as a strong “southwesterly” weather front, described by the local residents as “arriving straight from Antarctica” and which brought strong winds, heavy rain, and low temperatures. Alan’s recollection of the climate of this region, learned at school, is “warm wet westerly winds in winter”. This seems to be true in general, however when we were in the region the front passing through meant more or less constant rain, and nights which were really cold. We awoke one morning to find ice on the inside of the windscreen, resulting in limited enthusiasm to get up and get dressed.

Habiendo llegado a la costa suroeste de Australia Occidental después de cruzar el Nullarbor, nos encontramos en una región verde, agrícola, con hermosas playas y promontorios rocosos. Desafortunadamente, llegamos al mismo tiempo que un fuerte frente climático del "suroeste", descrito por los residentes locales como "que llega directamente de la Antártida" y que trajo fuertes vientos, lluvias intensas y bajas temperaturas. El recuerdo de Alan del clima de esta región, aprendido en la escuela, es “vientos cálidos y húmedos del oeste en invierno”. Esto parece ser cierto en general, sin embargo, cuando estábamos en la región, el paso del frente significaba más o menos lluvia constante, y noches realmente frías. Una mañana nos despertamos para encontrar hielo en el interior del parabrisas, lo que resultó en un entusiasmo limitado para levantarse y vestirse.

Cape Le Grand National Park

So, our first exploration of the region was to spend some time on the south coast. We visited various sites in Cape le Grand National Park, making our way west to Esperance, the first town since leaving Ceduna. We then took the Coastal Route as far as Blue Haven and Twilight Beach before returning to Esperance for the night. The following day, we took a short detour (something like 600Km) to visit Wave Rock, well-publicized in the visitors’ guides, and which afforded the opportunity to walk around and onto the rock itself.

Entonces, en nuestra primera exploración pasamos algún tiempo en la costa sur. Visitamos varios sitios en Cape le Grand National Park, dirigiéndonos hacia el oeste a Esperance, la primera ciudad desde que dejamos Ceduna. Luego tomamos la ruta costera hasta Blue Haven y Twilight Beach antes de regresar a Esperance para pasar la noche. Al día siguiente, tomamos un breve desvío (algo así como 600 km) para visitar Wave Rock, bien publicitado en las guías de visitantes, y que nos brindó la oportunidad de caminar alrededor de la roca.

We then headed to visit friends in Denmark - Paul and Gwen - whom Alan had not seen for about a decade, and who now run a winery outside the town. The setting is green and reminiscent of temperate farmland in Western Europe; we enjoyed sampling the excellent wine they produce, and catching with them through conversations at dinner, and indeed before and after.

Luego nos dirigimos a visitar a amigos en Denmark, Paul y Gwen, a quienes Alan no había visto durante una década, y que ahora dirigen su bodega fuera de la ciudad. El entorno es verde y recuerda a las tierras agrícolas templadas de Europa occidental; disfrutamos probando el excelente vino que producen y atrapados con ellos en conversaciones durante la cena, y de hecho antes y después.

After this we explored more of the region, stopping at the Sandalwood Factory nearby on our way to , Fitzgerald River National Park, where we stayed at an attractive campsite behind the beach in thick woods. At Point Ann we were pleased to see Southern Right Whales passing along the coast. We passed through Bremer Bay on our way to the Porongurup Range, where we walked up to the impressive Granite Skywalk through pleasant forest. Arriving back at the coast we visited Elephant Rocks and Green’s Pool. The following day took us to the Giants’ Treewalk and Snake Big Tree Grove, then on to Karri Valley.

Después de esto, exploramos más de la región, deteniéndonos en la fábrica de sándalo cercana en nuestro camino hacia el Parque Nacional Fitzgerald River, donde nos hospedamos en un atractivo campamento detrás de la playa en bosques espesos. En Point Ann nos complació ver a las ballenas francas australes pasar por la costa. Pasamos por Bremer Bay en nuestro camino hacia la Cordillera de Porongurup, donde caminamos hasta el impresionante Granite Skywalk a través de un agradable bosque. Al regresar a la costa visitamos Elephant Rocks y Green's Pool. El día siguiente nos llevó al the Giants’ Treewalk and Snake Big Tree Grove, luego a Karri Valley.

At Pemberton we visited the outstanding Peter Kovacsy Gallery, learning about impressive artistic techniques integrating glass, ceramics, wood, and metal.

En Pemberton visitamos la destacada Galería Peter Kovacsy, donde aprendimos sobre técnicas artísticas impresionantes que integran vidrio, cerámica, madera y metal.

We next headed for Margaret River, stopping at Donnell’s General Store en route. We visited the Gnarabup Lookout (our first view of the Indian Ocean since Tanzania!) and then Surfers’ Point (complete with surfers in a competition), then to Cowaramup for a night. We found ourselves in an area with many wineries, good restaurants, art galleries, and some crafts, although less than expected of the latter. We chose to visit the Cullen Winery, Vasse Felix Winery (where we enjoyed an excellent lunch), and the Yallingup Gallery, Canal Rocks, Sugarloaf Rock, and then stayed in Dunsborough that night.

Luego nos dirigimos a Margaret River, parando en la tienda general de Donnell en ruta. Visitamos Gnarabup Lookout (¡nuestra primera vista del Océano Índico desde Tanzania!) Y luego el Punto de los Surfistas (completo con surfistas en una competencia), luego a Cowaramup por una noche. Nos encontramos en un área con muchas bodegas, buenos restaurantes, galerías de arte y algunas artesanías, aunque menos de lo esperado de este último. Elegimos visitar la Bodega Cullen, la Bodega Vasse Felix (donde disfrutamos de un excelente almuerzo), y la Galería Yallingup, las Rocas del Canal, la Roca del Pan de Azúcar, y esa noche nos quedamos en Dunsborough.

Moving on we visited the famed Busselton Jetty and its aquarium, before the last stage of our journey to Perth, where we planned to spend a few days,  take advantage of being in the last big city we would visit until reaching Darwin, around a month later.

Continuando, visitamos el famoso Busselton Jetty y su acuario, antes de la última etapa de nuestro viaje a Perth, donde planeamos pasar unos días, aprovechar la oportunidad de estar en la última gran ciudad que visitaremos hasta que dentro de aproximadamente un mes lleguemos a Darwin.

In Perth we were able to spend some time in PICA, AGWA, and the Western Australia Library, enjoying the exhibitions in these. Elizabeth Quay was a good option for lunch, after which we visited the excellent Botanic Gardens. We also went to Fremantle by train, which proved to be an attractive place with art galleries, restaurants, and historic architecture.

En Perth pudimos pasar un tiempo en PICA, AGWA y la Biblioteca de Australia Occidental, disfrutando de las exposiciones en estos. Elizabeth Quay fue una buena opción para el almuerzo, después de lo cual visitamos los excelentes Jardines Botánicos. También fuimos a Fremantle en tren, que resultó ser un lugar atractivo con galerías de arte, restaurantes y arquitectura histórica.

While in Perth we also caught up with friends, once again whom Alan had not seen for some years - Doug and Doug (over lunch overlooking the beach), and Arthur (at Elizabeth Quay) - it was great to catch up on our lives, as well as to receive advice on where we should plan to visit in the next stage of our journey, northwards along the Indian Ocean coast and into Pilbara and Kimberley.

Mientras estábamos en Perth, también nos reunimos con amigos, una vez más a quienes Alan no había visto durante algunos años, Doug y Doug (durante el almuerzo mirando a la playa), y Arthur (en Elizabeth Quay), fue genial ponerse al día con nuestras vidas, así como para recibir consejos sobre dónde que visitar en la siguiente etapa de nuestro viaje, hacia el norte a lo largo de la costa del Océano Índico y hacia Pilbara y Kimberley.
