Katoomba, Sydney, Tarbuck Bay, Hat Head, Nambucca, Mullumbimby: the last section

Blue mountains

Leaving Canberra we were heading for the Blue Mountains, through which we had travelled early in the trip, although conscious that there was more to see and enjoy. We travelled north off the main highway, impressed by the evidence of bush fires, including a huge fire to our east and then south of us as we approached the mountains. The escarpment is impressive, although the smoky atmosphere reduced clarity of the view.

Saliendo de Canberra nos dirigimos a las Montañas Azules, las habíamos visitado antes en nuestro viaje, conscientes de necesitar una segunda visita para completar nuestra exploración de la zona. Viajamos al norte, afuera de la carretera principal, y quedamos impresionados con la evidencia de incendios forestales, incluyendo un incendió inmenso al este y después a nuestro sur cuando nos acercamos a las montañas. Una vez en el destino,  pudimos ver un acantilado impresionante, a pesar de la atmósfera llena de humo, que redujo la claridad de la vista.

The following day we visited a variety of walks giving views of Katoomba Falls and the escarpment from multiple lookout points; at one of which were several firefighters monitoring the progress of efforts to extinguish, or at least control, fires in the forest below the escarpment. We heard how stretched were the resources of the rural fire service, running out of fire trucks, aircraft, and people, since the service operates with volunteers who were now running out of days they could contribute to firefighting.

El día siguiente realizamos varias caminatas con vista a la Cataratas de Katoomba y al acantilado en varios miradores, en uno de ellos, los  miembros del equipo de bomberos rurales monitoreaban el progreso de los esfuerzos de extinción, o por lo menos control, de los incendios abajo del acantilado. Oímos que los recursos de los bomberos estaban casi desgastados - camiones, aviones, helicópteros, y gente, porque el servicio opera con voluntarios, quienes ala fecha habían usado casi todos sus días disponibles.

It was good to see the views, although the smoke, and large number of other visitors (many of whom were more interested in loud conversation than appreciating the environment) did not help enjoy our time there. Later in December we heard that the roads giving access to the lookouts we had visited had been closed by the bushfires, so we were fortunate in our timing, although this is clearly irrelevant compared with the challenges of the community there, as well as throughout the country, experiencing its worst bush fires for many years.

Disfrutamos ver el paisaje, sin embargo el humo, y el gran número de otros visitantes (mucho de ellos más interesados en conversar ruidosamente que en apreciación del ambiente) afectaron el disfrute de nuestro tiempo. Días más tarde, en diciembre, oímos que las carreteras que dan acceso a lo miradores, estaban cerradas por los incendios, fuimos afortunados en términos de los tiempos de nuestra visita, sin embargo esto es claramente irrelevante comparado con los retos de la comunidad de la zona, y en todo el país, experimentando los peores incendios en muchos años.

Leaving The Blue Mountains we continued to Sydney to spend some time with Dani, enjoying good food and conversation, as well as picking up our second spare wheel. It was great to see her again for the last time in this trip. We then headed north to stop in at Tarbuck Bay, enjoying seeing Kirsty and Michael there, as well as walking Boomerang Beach and enjoying coffee and fresh muffins at Kembali in Bluey’s Bay.

Saliendo de las Montañas Azules, seguimos a Sydney para compartir más tiempo con Dani, disfrutando buena comida y conversación, también recuperando nuestra segunda rueda de repuesto. Fue rico ver Dani por la ultima vez en este viaje. Seguimos al norte, parando en Tarbuck Bay, donde Kirsty y Michael, disfrutamos su compañía otra vez, así como caminar por  Boomerang Beach, y tomar café y muffins frescos en Kembali, Bluey’s Bay.

We then continued northwards, stopping in Port MacQuarie to visit the Glasshouse Art Gallery and Arthouse Industries. We took the ferry to the North Shore and investigated the coastal track however quickly decided to take the better road north on the riverside to Hat Head National Park.

De aquí pasamos al norte, parando en Port MacQuarie para visitar la Galería de Arte Glasshouse y Arthouse Industries. Tomamos el ferry a la Orilla Norte y exploramos la ruta costera pero rápidamente elegimos usar la ruta asfaltada al lado del río hasta el Parque Nacional Hat Head.

In the morning we walked around Hat Head on the Korogoro Track, had lunch at the Hat Head Bowling Club, and then continued northwards to Smoky Cape Beach, where we had thought to camp, however after a short walk on the beach from the campground we chose to continue further north to Nambucca Heads, which proved to be a more attractive campsite.

En la mañana caminamos la península de Hat Head por el sendero de Korogoro, almorzamos en el Hat Head Bowling Club, y continuamos al norte para llegar a la Playa de Smoky Cape, donde habíamos pensado acampar, pero después de caminar allí, y considerando lo seco del entorno y la prohibición absoluta de uso de fuego,  elegimos pasar más al norte, a Nambucca Heads, donde encontramos un campamento más atractivo.

Urunga

In search of birds we made our way to Urunga and enjoyed the boardwalk, seeing migrant and local waders, gulls, and pelicans, among others. Heading further north we stopped at the Yarrawarra Cultural Centre, which proved worthwhile, and then at MacLean, advertised on the highway as a Scottish town, and which had little to do with Scotland other than tartan lampposts (with errors in the identification of the tartans involved, we found).

Buscando aves pasamos a Urunga, allí caminamos por un malecón, donde vimos varios aves marinos y acuáticos, locales y migrantes. Siguiendo más al norte paramos al Centro Cultural Yarrawarra, que fue rico y interesante, y después a MacLean, cuya publicidad dice es un pueblo escocés, sin embargo no tenia nada escoces mas que las farolas pintadas en tartán (con errores en la identificación de algunos de los tartanes involucrados).

At the end of that day we arrived at the rendezvous point to meet Eduardo, a Colombian friend of our close friend Ana Cecilia, and followed him up the steep road to his house on the mountainside below Mount Jerusalem, where we met Eva and Lola, enjoying a delicious dinner and long conversations with them before retiring to camp in their garden. In the morning we had a delicious al fresco shower before breakfasting with them and then heading north to Currumbin, to begin the process of unpacking the car, doing a deep cleaning, repacking and sending it to Colombia. Apparently our trip is coming to an end in these lands.

Al final de este día llegamos a un punto de encuentro para reunirnos con Eduardo, un Colombiano y buen amigo de nuestra amiga Ana Cecilia, y lo seguimos por una ruta muy inclinada a su casa en la falda de Mount Jerusalem, donde conocimos a Eva y Lila. Disfrutamos una cena deliciosa y conversaciones extensas antes de dormir, acampamos en su jardín, en la mañana nos duchamos deliciosamente a aire libre, desayunamos con ellos, y entonces nos dirigimos al norte hasta Currumbin, para comenzar el procesos de desempacar el carro, hacerle una limpieza profunda, volver a empacar y enviarlo a Colombia. Al parecer nuestro viaje está llegando a su fin en estas tierras.
