Arriving on the “big island” again we were going to head for Canberra, to spend some more time in the museums and galleries, and also to return to the National Museum of Australia to see how the experience would be different after having spent nine months or so exploring the country.

After a good breakfast we headed north on the main highway and made our way to Albury, with a stop at the Chiltern Bakery and a wander on the main street. We took in the Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) which proved a worthwhile stop, and continues to spend the night at Holbrook.

Our time in Canberra can be viewed in three aspects: museums and galleries, food, and “other”:

Museums and Galleries:
We revisited the National Museum of Australia, where we reflected on the insights we had gained from travelling around much of the country and how these had given us a new perspective on the museum’s exhibits, visited the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders which had an interesting exhibition on language, went to visit the Contemporary Art Space however found it closed, and then visited the National Portrait Gallery, where the exhibition of “great Australians” impressed us, and the National Gallery, CMAG, and Craft ACT: Craft + Design Centre.
Exhibition at National Museum of Australia |

We ate at Zaab, which was good, the Bent Spoke Brewery, where we ate and drank with Paul, Julian and Hugo (Paul having noticed the car the previous day when Marce was parking and struck up a conversation which we continued at the Brewery), My Café Manuka, and Rizla. It was good to be able to consider a wider range of culinary alternatives than we had had available during the last couple of weeks (and indeed, most of the last 9 months), although our dining experience in Tasmania had been good, taking into account our meals at MONA, and the availability of Tasmanian scallop pies.

View from Red Hill Lookout |
In our search for the Contemporary Art Space we found ourselves in Manuka and Kingston, where had lunched on our previous visit to Canberra, however this time we has the time to wander around the areas, finding an attractive neighbourhood with some interesting shops. We also drove up to the Red Hill Lookout, giving a good view of the city, including sight of more than one significant bushfire in progress in the distance, as well as a small population of kangaroos which, for some reason, seemed a little out of place here.
Otro:
So, we enjoyed our return to Canberra, and found that we had no difficulty finding things to do and places to visit. The museums and galleries were well worth the visits, and it was easy to get around (although not so easy to park...).
Abrazos
