We entered the tableland on our way to Laura (we will describe this visit in a later post). An immense fire closed the road, so we decided to change plans. Going to Daintree National Park first, and from there connecting to Laura from the north. Even though Daintree is a important national park and the home of the wet rainforest world heritage area, it was not easy for us to find enough information about it and how to optimise our visit; then we understood that there aren't many options, so you explore in a very simple way.

Entramos en The Tableland en nuestro camino a Laura (describiremos esta visita en una publicación posterior). Un inmenso incendio cerró el camino, por lo que decidimos cambiar de planes. Yendo primero al Parque Nacional Daintree, y desde allí conectando con Laura desde el norte. Aun cuando Daientree es un importante Parque Nacional y un lugar patrimonio de la humanidad por los bosques húmedos tropicales, no fue fácil para nosotros encontrar suficiente información al respecto sobre cómo optimizar nuestra visita, después entendimos entendimos que no hay muchas opciones, así que exploramos la región de una manera muy simple.

River at Mossman Gorge

Mossman Gorge was the first place to explore; it is a very popular place and the closest to Cairns, the biggest city in the area. The trail to the forest is very well designed to allow a good exploration of the structure of the forest and the streams. The water is clear and the currents in it strong; even though there was a clear recommendation not to swim, in a very Australian way several families were in the water fighting the currents.

Mossman Gorge fue el primer lugar para explorar, es un lugar muy popular yel más cerca de Cairns, la ciudad más grande de la zona. El sendero hacia el bosque está muy bien diseñado para tener una buena exploración de la estructura del bosque y los arroyos. El agua es clara y las corrientes son fuertes, aunque había una recomendación clara de no nadar, de una manera muy australiana, varias familias estaban en el agua cruzando las corrientes.

We continued north into the Daintree area; the road has several lookouts to enjoy the view of the mountains and the forest connecting with the sea. We crossed on the ferry and explored the different sites available on the way. The campground was beautiful, full of birds and trees, and with the Metallic Starlings starting to nest. Next day after visiting the main attraction of Daintree area - the Ice cream shop, with marvelous tropical fruit flavours - we explored the Daintree Discovery Centre, a place full of information which increased our awareness of the forest and its ecosystem, and offered us more context for our exploration.

Continuamos hacia el norte hasta el área de Daintree, el camino tiene varios miradores para disfrutar de la vista de la montaña y el bosque que conectan con el mar. Cruzamos el ferry y exploramos los diferentes lugares disponibles. El campamento al que llegamos fue hermoso, lleno de pájaros y árboles y con cientos de Metallic Sterling comenzando a anidar . Al día siguiente, después de visitar la atracción principal del área de Daintree, la Heladería, con maravillosos sabores de frutas tropicales, exploramos el Daintree Discovery Center, un lugar lleno de información que aumenta la conciencia sobre el bosque y su ecosistema, y nos ofreció más contexto para nuestra exploración.

We took a boat to explore the Daintree River, with a focus on Birdlife, the experience were rich, not only because we could spot beautiful birds difficult to see otherwise, but also for the knowledge shared by Alex.  The tour allowed only 8 people, so it was totally different from our previous experiences and very rewarding.

 Tomamos un bote para explorar el río Daintree, con enfoque en Birdlife, la experiencia fue rica, no solo porque pudimos ver hermosos pájaros difíciles de ver de una manera diferente, sino también por el conocimiento compartido por Alex, el recorrido solo permite 8 personas, por lo que fue totalmente diferente de nuestras experiencias anteriores y muy valioso.

Daintree National Park has  four walking trails defined to explore several dimensions of the natural environment. The one in the southern part was very useful to appreciate the forest with tall trees and several types of vine which connect the elements. The density of the vegetation creates shade which makes walking pleasent. We were surprised by the silence in the forest compared with other rain forests we know. There appears to be less activity, and we had noted relatively few birds and animals, which seems inconsistent with the claimed biodiversity in this wet tropical forest.

El Parque Nacional Daintree ha definido cuatro senderos para explorar varias dimensiones del entorno natural. El que está en la parte sur, es muy útil para apreciar el bosque con árboles altos y varias enredaderas que conectan los elementos. La densidad de la vegetación crea sombra que hace que caminar sea agradable. Nos sorprendió el silencio en el bosque, en comparación con otros bosques tropicales que conocemos. Parece haber menos actividad, y notamos relativamente pocas aves y animales, lo que parece inconsistente con la biodiversidad reclamada en este bosque tropical húmedo.

The trail close to the river allowed us to learn more about the mangroves and their mechanisms to capture oxygen, and the one in Cape Tribulation shows the transition between mountain forest and mangroves. The fan palm clusters create a natural ceiling refreshing and full of beauty, but the real gift of this forest was to see cassowary; a male was in the middle of the bush, looking for fruit and seeds. After watching for a while, we realised that there were chicks as well, their down is brown with stripes and they look so small compared with their father. Some time later the big cassowary jumped to its feet suddenly to chase away another male coming into its territory.  It was exciting to see this family, of such a difficult bird to see.

El que está cerca del río nos permitió aprender más sobre los manglares y sus mecanismos para capturar oxígeno, y el de Cape Tribulation, muestra la transición entre el bosque de montaña y los manglares, los grupos de palmeras de abanico crean un techo natural refrescante y lleno de belleza, pero el verdadero regalo de este bosque fue ver Cassowary, un macho estaba en el medio de los arbustos, buscando frutas y semillas, después de observar por un tiempo, nos dimos cuenta de que también habían polluelos, su plumón es marrón con rayas y se ven muy pequeños en comparación con su padre. Algún tiempo después, el gran cassowary se puso de pie de repente para ahuyentar a otro macho entrando en su territorio. Fue emocionante ver a esta familia, de un pájaro tan difícil de ver.

With the intention of seeing some nocturnal wildlife, we decided to take a night walk, henceforth known as “the spider tour”. We arrived at the meeting point on time and 10 minutes later a noisy van drove up with an eccentric guide; after picking up all the guests, we ascended to the Sky Line Park, which was where we would be walking. We were equipped with powerful torches and introduced to the art of identifying reflections associated with animal eyes, this was very useful. Our first spot was a spider, and the second, the third, the fourth, and nearly all of the others were spiders. Walking with a very limited light was itself a challenge but, doing this through a dry creek bed, with spiders everywhere, was highly stressful, specially for Alan, who doesn’t love spiders. After 2-1/2 hours, and spotting one small mammal and two frogs, we returned to the meeting point, with the hope of seeing something else during our return trip to the campsite.

Con la intención de ver un poco de vida nocturna, decidimos hacer un tour nocturno, denominado a partir de ahora como "El Tour de la Araña". Llegamos al punto de encuentro a tiempo y 10 minutos después, una camioneta ruidosa llegó con un guía excéntrico, después de recoger a todos los expedicionarios, ascendimos al Sky Line Park, que era donde estaríamos caminando. Estábamos equipados con potentes linternas y nos hicieron una introducción al arte de identificar el reflejo asociado con los ojos de los animales, esto fue muy útil. Nuestro primer spot fue una araña, y el segundo, el tercero, el cuarto y casi todos los demás fueron arañas. Caminar con una luz muy limitada fue un desafío en sí mismo, pero hacerlo a través del lecho de un arroyo seco, con arañas por todas partes, fue muy estresante, especialmente para Alan, que no ama las arañas. Después de 2:30 horas, y viendo un pequeño mamífero y dos ranas, regresamos al punto de encuentro, con la esperanza de ver algo más durante nuestro viaje de regreso al campamento.

In addition to the always amazing landscape where the mountains meet the sea, Cape Tribulation doesn’t have more to offer for our interests, so we decided to make our way north, crossing the natural park on the Bloomfield Track. The first 30 Km were in the park; despite warning signs telling us of steep climbs and descents, difficult track conditions, and the indispensability of 4WD, in fact the track presented no challenge, although no doubt it could be difficult in wet season. Despite its being dusty, the forest and the river were exuberant. Leaving the park the savanna landscape was predominant, and the route was a pleasant hilly environment.

Además del paisaje siempre sorprendente donde las montañas se encuentran con el mar, Cape Tribulation no tiene más que ofrecer para nuestros intereses, por lo que decidimos dirigirnos hacia el norte y cruzar el parque natural por la trocha de Bloomfield. Los primeros 30 km fueron en el parque, a pesar de las señales de advertencia que nos informaban sobre fuertes ascensos y descensos, condiciones difíciles de la ruta y la indispensabilidad de 4WD, de hecho, la pista no presentó ningún desafío, aunque no cabe duda de que podría ser difícil en la temporada de lluvias. A pesar de ser polvoriento, el bosque y el río fueron exuberantes. Al salir del parque predominó el paisaje de la sabana, y la ruta en un ambiente montañoso fue agradable.

We took this route in order to reach Laura, a town recognised for its aboriginal dance festival and the collection of rock art, which allowed us to visit an aboriginal art centre in a remote village on our way. When we arrived at Wujal Wujal the art centre was under re-construction, so we couldn’t visit it. The next stop was Lakeland, a very tiny place with very little functioning, and finally, Laura. The art centre, the only place authorised to run guided visits to certain rock art places, was closed. A phone number was available, different from the published number; because they were fully booked they were not able to take us on any guided tour for the next three days. Looking around, the town was empty and unattractive, not a place where we wanted to stay for four nights, so we decided to visit the rock art galleries open to the public and make our way south to towards the Tableland.

Tomamos esta ruta para llegar a Laura, una poblado reconocido por su festival de danza aborigen, y la colección de arte rupestre, que nos permitía visitar un centro de arte aborigen en un pueblo remoto en nuestro camino. Cuando llegamos a Wuyal Wuyal, el centro de arte estaba en reconstrucción, por lo que no pudimos visitarlo. La siguiente parada fue Lakeland, un lugar muy pequeño con muy poco en funcionamiento, y finalmente, Laura. El centro de arte, y el único lugar autorizado para realizar visitas guiadas a ciertos lugares de arte rupestre, estaba cerrado. Había un número de teléfono disponible, diferente del número publicado en su pagina web y a través del cuál habíamos tratado sin éxito de hacer contacto en los días previos. Dado que ellos estaban completamente reservados y no podrían realizar ninguna visita guiada durante los próximos tres días. Mirando alrededor el pueblo estaba vacío y poco atractivo, no era un lugar donde quisiéramos quedarnos cuatro noches, así que decidimos visitar las galerías abiertas al público y dirigirnos hacia las mesetas en dirección sur.

There are three art galleries 11 Km south of Laura, accesible on a short walking trail. The art was different from what we had seen elsewhere in Australia. Subjects included dingos, bats, turtles, tall spirits, as well as women and men. It was very striking to see this distinctive and ancient manifestation.

Hay tres galerías de arte a 11 Km al sur de Laura, accesibles por un corto sendero para caminar. El arte fue diferente de lo que habíamos visto en otros lugares de Australia. Los temas incluyeron dingos, murciélagos, tortugas, espíritus altos, así como mujeres y hombres. Fue muy sorprendente ver esta manifestación distintiva y antigua.

At the end of the day we arrived at the Palmer River Roadhouse, where we enjoyed the history of the owners' family, their experience in the goldfields, and the challenges of travelling in the area, as well as a great steak and a warm conversation with Alejandra, a young Chilean woman, travelling and working in Aussieland.

Al final del día, llegamos a la estación de servicio del Río Palmer, para disfrutar de la historia de la familia de los propietarios, su experiencia en los campos de oro y los desafíos de viajar por la zona desde los 60’s, pero también un excelente bistec y una cálida conversación con Alejandra, una joven chilena que trabaja y viaja por estas tierras.
