One of the natural treasures of the planet, now under threat from global warming and tourism, is the Great Barrier Reef. More than a “reef” it’s more than 2900 reefs and 900 islands, and stretches more than 2300 Km offshore the east coast of Australia. So, the question was “where and how do we explore (some of) this?”. A concern was that we had heard and read that much of the reef was badly damaged in areas where large numbers of visitors have failed to do what’s necessary to avoid damaging the coral, and also more widely by bleaching caused by global warming.  So we wanted to visit the reef in places less heavily visited.

Uno de los tesoros naturales del planeta, ahora amenazado por el calentamiento global y el turismo, es la “Gran Barrera de Coral”. Más que un arrecife, son más que 2900 arrecifes y 900 islas, y ocupa una extensión de más de que 2300 Km costa afuera de la costa oriental de Australia. Entonces, la pregunta era “Dónde y Cómo podemos explorarla, al menos una parte?”. Habíamos escuchamos que mucho de los arrecifes están muy dañados, especialmente en zonas con muchos visitantes  en donde no se han tomado las precauciones suficientes para proteger el coral, y también, mas extensamente, por el emblanquecimiento causado por calentamiento global, por esto queríamos explorar alguna zona(s) menos visitada.

Our plans crystallised when we had the pleasure of visiting friends we had made in the Kimberly; we had met Michael and Jess there and had made friends with them during our time exploring the gorges in El Questro. They live in the Whitsundays, and had invited us to visit them when we were in the area. We enjoyed their generous hospitality and shared with them visits to Grassy Island, Gloucester Island, and Airlie Beach, as well as exploring the local ecosystem via a convenient creek bed. We also enjoyed conversations on multiple topics, and enjoyed relaxing for a few days on this beautiful coast.

Nuestros planes cristalizaron cuando tuvimos el placer de visitar amigos que conocimos en el “Kimberly”: Michael y Jess, a los que conocimiento explorado los cañones en El Questro. Ellos vivien en los Whitsundays y nos invitaron a visitarlos cuando pasaremos por allá. Disfrutamos su hospitalidad generosa y compartimos con ellos visitas a Grassy Island, Gloucester Island, e Airlie Beach, también exploramos el ecosistema local,  disfrutamos muchas conversaciones extensas sobre diversos asuntos, mientras nos relajábamos unos días en una costa hermosa.

The Whitsundays are not part of the Great Barrier Reef itself, however Airlie Beach is a jumping off point for trips to the reef, and we considered making a trip from this port. The weather was not ideal when we could have done so, and in addition, it was suggested that a better place to enjoy the reef was Heron island, in the Capricornia Cays National Park. We decided that this latter would be our choice.

Los Whitsundays no son parte de la gran barrera de coral, sin embargo Airlie Beach es un punto de partido por viajes al arrecife y pensamos hacer una visita desde este puerto, sinembargo el clima no fue ideal cuando estábamos allá y nos fue sugerido un lugar mejor Heron Island, en el Parque Nacional Capricornio Cays. Elegimos este sitio.

Our route south, over several days, took us to Black’s Beach at Mackay, where we walked along the beach to go for dinner, the Capricorn Caves, Yeppoon, Rockhampton (where we enjoyed visiting the Art Gallery), Mount Larcom, and then Gladstone. Gladstone is an industrial port, with little to attract tourists other than the dock from which one can take a catamaran to Heron Island and boats to several other reef sites.

En nuestro trayecto al sur, durante varios días, pasamos por Black’s Beach en Mackay, donde caminamos por la playa para ir a cenar, las cuevas de Capricorn, Yeppoon, Rockhampton (donde disfrutamos la Galería de Arte), Mount Larcom, y Gladstone. Gladstone es un puerto industrial con poco para atraer turistas más allá del muelle dónde sale un catamaran para ir a Heron Island y barcos para visitar varios otros sitios en el arrecife.

The catamaran trip is a couple of hours and we arrived at midday. The Island Resort is organised in terms of providing opportunities to take advantage of the different activities available, and we left our backpacks at reception while taking a boat to go snorkelling during the afternoon. The water was very clear, the coral in excellent health, and the marine wildlife prolific and beautiful.

El viaje en el catamarán toma dos horas aproximadamente, y llegamos al mediodía. El lugar está bien organizado en términos de facilitar oportunidades para aprovechar las actividades disponibles,  así que dejamos nuestros morales en recepción mientras tomamos un barco para hacer snorkel por la tarde. El agua fue transparente, el coral muy sano, y la vida silvestre prolífica y hermosa.

On returning to the dock we checked into our room and returned to the dock at the end of the afternoon, seeing sharks, turtles, and rays in the shallow waters. 

Cuando volvimos al muelle nos registramos y más tarde fuimos al muelle otra vez, vimos tiburones, tortugas, y rayas en los aguas someras.

The following morning we went snorkelling from the beach and in the afternoon made another snorkelling boat expedition, this time to a site further around the reef, with stronger current, however once again with good coral and wildlife.

La mañana siguiente fuimos a hacer snorkel de la playa y en la tarde hicimos otra excursión en  barco para explorar otra zona, esta vez a un sitio más lejano, con corriente más fuerte, otra vez con buen coral y buena vida silvestre.

The following morning we checked our after breakfast and took the “semisubmersible” i-Spy (essentially a glass-bottomed boat with a subsea viewing deck providing an excellent view into the ocean, from which we enjoyed this access to the reef environment.

La mañana siguiente hicimos “check-out” después de desayuno y tuvimos el “semi-sumergible” i-Spy (esencialmente un barco con casco de vidrio y cubierta mirador submarino con vista muy buena del océano, desde donde disfrutamos el ambiente del arrecife.

We then took the catamaran back to Gladstone dock, being reunited with our two backpacks, mistakenly sent ahead of us by seaplane, giving rise to some concern on our part as one can imagine.

Entonces tomamos el catamaran hacia Gladstone, reuniéndonos con nuestros morales, que fueron enviados erróneamente por avión, causándonos algún nivel de preocupación, como pueden imaginarse.



Heron Island was a success: although not the most economical way to see something of the reef, it was well worthwhile; the waters were clear, the wildlife was diverse and more prolific than we had imagined, and the overall experience an outstanding opportunity to enjoy this natural wonder.

Heron Island fue un éxito: a pesar del hecho que no es la forma más económica para ver el arrecife, fue muy valiosa. Los aguas fueron claros, la vida silvestre diversa y más prolífica de lo  que habíamos esperado, y la experiencia una oportunidad excelente para disfrutar esta maravilla natural.
