Hobart and the “Far South” / Hobart y el “Sur Lejano”

This was our second visit to Hobart on the trip - we had flown in and out of Hobart twice earlier in the year, and on one occasion had spent the night and visited MONA, however we were now planning to explore the city with more time. We intended to stay in an AirBnB or inexpensive hotel, however inexpensive appears to be a word not included in Hobart’s dictionary and so we ended up in an AirBnB at the highest point in Sandy Bay, a long way from town, and still not exactly economical. Even so, the weather made this a good decision, and it proved to be reasonably practical to travel from this outpost into the centre.

MONA

Fue nuestra segunda visita a Hobart en este viaje - volamos dos veces  más temprano en el año, y una vez nos quedamos una noche y visitado MONA; esta vez planeamos explorar la ciudad con más tiempo. Tuvimos la intención de alojarnos en un AirBnB o hostal económico, pero parece que la palabra económica no existe en el diccionario de Hobart, y llegamos finalmente en un AirBnB a la cima del barrio Sandy Bay, lejano de la ciudad, y no tan económico. Sin embargo fue una decisión buena dado el clima y fue relativamente práctico viajar desde este sitio al centro.

We spent much of one day at MONA, including an excellent lunch at the restaurant we had not previously tried, and the overall experience confirmed our view that this museum is one of the outstanding attractions in Australia, both in the arts and culinary senses.

Usamos casi un día en MONA, incluyendo un almuerzo muy rico  en uno de los restaurante que no habíamos probado antes; la experiencia confirmó nuestro opinión: este museo es uno de las atracciones sobresalientes de Australia, en los sentidos artístico y culinario.

Tasmanian Waratah

The following day was, fortunately, a Saturday, and so we were able to go to the renowned Salamanca Market, which proved to live up to its reputation as one of the best street markets in the country, if not the best (the Mendel market in Darwin being the obvious competitor for the top spot). Breakfast was a cross-cultural experience - Wallaby Burritos - delicious! We found many stalls with attractive offers, of which we took advantage, and also we enjoyed visiting the various art shops in Salamanca, as well as excellent coffee at Retro.

Cloudy Bay

Afortunadamente el día siguiente fue sábado entonces pudimos visitar el reconocido mercado de Salamanca, que honró su reputación como uno de los mercados mejores del país, si no el mejor (el mercado Medea en Darwin  es la competencia obvia por el título). El Desayuno fue una experiencia multicultural - Burritos de Wallaby - deliciosos! Encontramos muchos puestos con ofertas ricas, de las cuales tomamos ventaja, también disfrutamos varios tiendas de artesanía de Salamanca, y café reparador en Retro.

Leaving Hobart we headed to Bruny Island, crossing on the short ferry ride and then stopping at the Truganini Lookout at Bruny Island Neck, which gives an excellent view of the Neck and surrounding area, albeit in a westerly gale which deterred us from any exploration of the beach at the Neck.

Saliendo de Hobart nos dirigimos a la Isla de Bruny, cruzando por el ferry y después parando al mirador de Truganini a Bruny Island Neck, con excelente vista del cuello y la zona, a pesar de un viento muy fuerte del occidente que nos convenció para no explorar la playa allá.

We camped at Adventure Bay, enjoying a walk through the woods on the riverbank, returning via the beach. The following day we continued south to Cape Bruny lighthouse and then returned northwards, stopping for lunch at “Get Shucked” after which we enjoyed coffee at Cheese, Wine, & Bread, and then stopped to sample the gins at the Bruny Island Whisky distillery (we had thought to try the malt whiskys, however budget did not permit this). We also enjoyed conversation with Doug and John, Adelaide-based bikers who were travelling the area and whom we met in both of the latter places.

Acampamos a la Bahía de Aventura, disfrutando una caminata rica por el bosque, volviendo al campamento por la playa. El día siguiente fuimos al sur para visitar el faro de Cape Bruny y entonces volvimos al norte, almorzando en “Get Shucked” y tomando café a “Cheese, Wine, & Bread”; luego probamos los ginebras de la destilería “Bruny Island Whisky” (pensamos probar un whisky pero nuestro presupuesto no permitió hacerlo). También disfrutamos conversar con Doug y John, entusiastas de las motos viajando por la zona y a quienes encontramos en los dos últimos sitios.

On our departure from the island we stopped at Ye Olde Oyster Cove Store to replenish groceries with fresh products, and enjoyed seeing a traditional store with good produce and friendly greeting.

Saliendo de la isla paramos a “Ye Olde Oyster Cove Store” para hacer mercado buscando productos frescos, fue rico ver una tienda tradicional con productos ricos y bienvenida amable.

Bruny Island

We then headed north to the central mountains country, where we planned to explore Mount Field National Park before heading the west coast.

Desde allí nos dirigimos al norte por las montañas centrales, donde planeamos explorar el Parque Nacional de Mount Field antes de ir a la costa occidental.
