Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road

Phillip Island is not far from Melbourne and we encountered increasing traffic in both directions, including lots of motorcyclists heading to the Motorcycle GP. We arrived at the end of the afternoon to stay with Paula and Juan Felipe, expatriate Colombians, who generously hosted our stays in Melbourne. It was very enjoyable to share our time  together and benefit from their advice on the city. Thanks you for your generosity and loving reception.

Phillip Island está cerca a Melbourne, notamos que el tráfico estaba creciendo en ambos sentidos, incluyendo muchos motociclistas en ruta al Gran Premio de motociclismo. Llegamos al final de la tarde donde Paula y Juan Felipe, expatriados Colombianos, quienes generosamente nos invitaron a quedar con ellos en Melbourne. Fue muy rico compartir nuestro tiempo con ellos y beneficiarnos de sus consejos sobre la ciudad. Gracias por su generosa y amorosa acogida.

We enjoyed good food every day, visited markets and the traditional arcades of Melbourne, experienced the casino, and visited the National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery Ian Potter, ACCA, and the Australian Galleries. We also took the opportunity to watch the World Cup rugby on the Riverside and to go to the cinema one night. As you can see in Melbourne we reconnect with all the pleasures of cities.

Disfrutamos comida rica cada día, visitamos mercados y “portales” tradicionales de Melbourne, experimentamos el casino, y visitamos La Galería Nacional de Arte de Victoria, La Galería Nacional de Ian Potter, ACCA, y las Galerías Australianas. También tuvimos la oportunidad de ver partidos del mundial de rugby al Riverside e ir al cine una noche. Como pueden ver en Melbourne nos re-concertamos con todos los placeres de la ciudad.

Melbourne proved to be a very liveable city, with a positive ambience, a variety of neighbourhoods, and (rarely found in our Australian experience) life after 8:00 pm.

Melbourne nos pareció una ciudad muy vivible, con un ambiente positivo, una variedad de barrios, y (infrecuente en nuestra experiencia en Australia) una vida después de 8:00 de la noche.

Great ocean road

We then left Melbourne to head west on the fabled Great Ocean Road, returning to spend one more enjoyable night with Paula and Juan Felipe before taking the ferry to Tasmania.

Salimos de Melbourne para ir al occidente por el fabulosa Gran Ruta Oceanica (“Great Ocean Road”), volviendo una vez más por una noche de encuentro y conversaciones con Paula y Juan Felipe antes de tomar el ferry por Tasmania.

A question we had been asked many times during the previous months was “Have you visited the Great Ocean Road?”. It had been on our radar since planning our trip, and it was now time to explore this iconic route. Heading out of Melbourne we soon reached the Narana Cultural Centre where we stopped to learn more about the aboriginal culture of this area, before continuing to Lorne, which proved to be an attractive town on the coast, with a good restaurant in which to dine.

Una preguntas que habíamos oído muchas veces en nuestro tiempo en Australia fue “¿Han visitado el Great Ocean Road?”. Estábamos concientes de esta ruta icónica en nuestra planeación y ahora llegaba la hora de  explorarla. Saliendo de Melbourne, en poco tiempo llegamos al Centro Cultural Narana, donde paramos para aprender más sobre la cultura aborigen de la zona, antes de continuar a Lorne, un pueblo lindo en la costa, con un restaurante bueno para cenar.

The following day took us to Erskine Falls, Teddy’s Lookout, Sheoak Falls, and the Mount Defiance Lookout. At the Wye General Store we were pleased to find Walker’s Stem Ginger biscuits which have become rare almost everywhere. At Kennet River we saw King Parrots, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, and Koalas. Our next stop was Apollo Bay where we enjoyed walking the beach path into the town centre, and back after dinner.

El día siguiente nos llevó a las Cataratas de Erskine, el mirador de Teddy, las Cataratas de Sheoak, y el mirador del Monte Defiance. En la tienda general de Wye estábamos felices de encontrar galletas de gengibre de Walkers, que ahora son difíciles de encontrar. Al río Kenner vimos Loros King, cacatuas de cresta de Azufre y Koalas, asi como otras pequeñas bellezas. Nuestra próxima parada fue Apollo Bay donde disfrutamos caminando por la playa al centro, y de vuelta después de nuestra cena.

Marriner’s Lookout was less worthwhile than advertised so we continued southwest to Cape Otway where we visited the Lightstation. Here we appreciated Brad’s excellent  Bush Tucker talk, learning about traditional food and other uses of local plants.

El mirador de Mariner fue menos interesante comparado con su publicidad entonces seguimos hasta Cabo Otway donde visitamos el faro. Aquí disfrutamos Brad, un guía quien nos relató mucho sobre las plantas locales y su utilidad como comida tradicional y medicinas naturales. Disfrutamos mucho su conversación.

Continuing along the Great Ocean Road we visited Melba Gully/Madsen’s Track, part of the Old Ocean Road, Gibson Steps, and finally the famed Twelve Apostles. That afternoon and the following morning we walked to Loch Arch, the Island Arch Lookout, the Razorback, the Muttonbird Island Lookout, Thunder Cave, Broken Head, the Sherbrooke River, The Baker’s Oven, and Sparkes Gully (are you keeping up?), then The Arches, London Bridge, The Grotto, and the Islands. This is the part of the GOR most often seen in publicity and it is indeed impressive in its scenery, although we enjoyed many more places along the coast as well. We then continued along the coast to Port Campbell and Warrnambool, whence we visited the Portland Powerhouse Motor Museum, Point Nelson Lighthouse, and Port Fairy before heading back to Melbourne.

Siguiendo por la Gran Ruta Oceánica visitamos el cañón de Melba, el sendero de Madsen, una parte de la ruta antigua, los escalones de Gibson, y finalmente los doce apóstoles famosos. Esta tarde y la mañana siguiente caminamos por Loch Arch, el mirador de Island Arch, el Razorback, el mirador de la isla de Muttonbird, La cueva de Trueno, Broken Head, el río Sherbrooke, El horno de Baker, y el cañón de Sparkes (están siguiendo esto?), entonces los Arcos, el puente de Londres, la Gruta, y “las islas”. Esta es el parte de la Gran Ruta más frecuentemente visto en la publicidad y de verdad está muy impresionante en su paisaje, sin embargo disfrutamos muchos otros sitios en la costa también. Después seguimos por la costa a Port Campbell y Warrnambool, este donde visitamos el museo automóvil Powerhouse, el faro de Punto Nelson, y puerto Fairy antes de volver a Melbourne.
