Gibb River Road, a trip through the Kimberley - Part 1

This is one of those iconic routes to explore, in the Australian Kimberley region, and the story started in Derby (not to be pronounced “Darby”). It’s the last place for supplies and the home of the Mowanjum Aboriginal Art and Cultural Centre, which represents the efforts of three aboriginal communities to keep their culture alive.

Esta es una de esas rutas icónicas para explorar en Australia en la región de Kimberley, y la historia comenzó en Darby. Es el último lugar de suministro y la casa del centro cultural y artístico de Mowanjum que representa los esfuerzos de tres comunidades aborígenes para mantener viva su cultura.

Mowanjum is a community constituted from three different groups: the Worroras, the Ngarinyin and the Winambul people, forced to live together during the 70s, by the government policy of the day. After having been moved three times, they arrived at this location, feeling the loss of  connection with their lands and traditions, so the art and cultural centre was a strategy to create a meaningful life, to teach their traditions to new generations, and avoid forgetting their roots.

Mowanjum es una comunidad formada por tres grupos diferentes: los Worroras, los Ngarinyin y los Winambul, obligados a vivir juntos alrededor de los 70, para la política del gobierno. Después de haberse mudado tres veces, llegaron a este lugar, sintiendo la pérdida de la conexión con sus tierras y tradiciones, por lo que el centro cultural y artístico fue la estrategia para crear una vida significativa, para enseñar sus tradiciones a las nuevas generaciones, y para evitar olvidar las raíces.


Visiting this place allowed us to understand better the history of the aboriginal peoples in this area, as well as to learn about the Wandjina, the most important being for these people in their social order, and to enjoy the expression of their artists. At night we were able to see a contemporary dance show, with three acts performed by aboriginal and non-aboriginal artists; we had the opportunity to see this show on an outdoor stage, on one of the brightest nights, and to appreciate the quality and the uniqueness of each piece was a real gift.

Visitar este lugar nos permitió para comprender mejor la historia de los pueblos aborígenes en esta área, así como conocer el Wandjina, el ser más importante para estos pueblos en su orden social, y disfrutar de la expresión de sus artistas. Por la noche pudimos ver un espectáculo de danza contemporánea, con tres actos realizados por artistas aborígenes y no aborígenes, tuvimos la oportunidad de ver este espectáculo en un escenario al aire libre, con una de las noches más brillantes, y para apreciar la calidad y la unicidad de cada pieza fue un verdadero regalo.

The landscape in the Kimberley is savanna: flat territory with trees and the distinctive presence of baobab trees, called locally boabs. Most of the road is unsealed, with some sections in reasonable condition and many sections with corrugations. The crows have been replaced by kites, and the temperature increases up to 36° C in the hottest hours of the day, when no more birds are visible.

El paisaje en Kimberley es de sabana, un territorio plano con árboles y la presencia única de Baobab, llamada localmente árbol de Boab. El camino es una mezcla de parches de camino sin sellar, con camino corrugado. El cuervo ha sido reemplazado por los gavilanes, y la temperatura ha aumentado hasta los 36° C en las horas más calurosas del día, no se ven más aves.

Tunnel Creek at the end

Our first destination, Tunnel Creek, is a system of heavily eroded limestone caves, part of the Napier Range. After climbing through the rocks at the entrance we  arrived at a pool with a sandy beach; at the edge of the water a well camouflaged freshwater crocodile with an open mouth. With that fabulous welcome it was more exciting to explore the cave. The cave has a mixture of flat rock, stalactites with amazing shapes, and domes, the rock is pink with white veins, and the trail goes through sandy beaches and two water crossings; before going into the water we checked for small red dots - croc eyes, only one crossing had a pair, far from the trail. On the other side the river bed continues between trees and some aboriginal art can be found in the external rock wall.

Rock at Tunnel Creek

Nuestro primer destino, Tunnel Creek, es un sistema de cuevas de piedra caliza erosionadas celestiales, parte de la cordillera Napier. Después de escalar la roca en la entrada, llegamos a una piscina con una playa de arena, al borde del agua, un cocodrilo de agua dulce bien camuflado, con la boca abierta. Con esa fabulosa bienvenida fue más emocionante explorar la cueva. La cueva tiene una mezcla de roca plana, estalactitas con formas asombrosas y cúpulas, la roca es rosada con veta blanca y el sendero atraviesa playas de arena y dos cruces de agua; Antes de ir al agua, comprobamos si había pequeños puntos rojos (ojos rojos), solo un cruce tenía un par, lejos del rastro. En el otro lado, el río continúa su flujo entre los árboles y algunas obras de arte aborigen en la pared externa.

Windjana Gorge Wall

The first thing that is visible in Windjana Gorge is a massive grey wall, full of texture and some orange areas, the gorge cuts through it. The wall is an old Devonian reef, only 380 million years old. The rocks are Devonian dolerite, in which can be found fossils of trilobites and nautilads, no doubt among others. We walked through a chasm to reach the gorge and came to a big pool occupied by freshwater, apparently somnolent, crocodiles. On either side are towering cliffs with kites and a solitary wedgetailed eagle soaring overhead. The trail follows the course of the gorge 3.5 Km to reach the other side of the reef structures; on the way a colony of fruit bats cackles, small lizards run scared, and a collection of boabs appears from time to time.

Windjana Gorge

Lo primero que se ve en Windjana Gorge es una enorme pared gris, llena de texturas y algunas áreas naranjas, que el canyon corta. El muro es un antiguo arrecife devónico, con solo 380 millones de años. Las rocas son dolorita devónica, en la que se pueden encontrar fósiles de trilobites y nautilos, sin duda entre otros. Caminamos a través de una grieta para alcanzar el cañon y encontramos un gran estanque ocupado por cocodrilos de agua dulce, aparentemente somnolientos. A ambos lados hay altos acantilados con gavilanes y una solitaria águila de cola de cuña que se eleva en la cima. El sendero sigue el curso de la garganta de 3.5 km hasta el otro lado de las estructuras del arrecife, en el camino una colonia de murciélagos de fruta cacarea, pequeñas lagartijas corren asustadas y una colección de boabs aparece de vez en cuando.

We crossed the King Leopold Range, the escarpments make the trip enjoyable for the variation in the landscape, yellow and red flowers are a beautiful touch in these dry lands. We visited Lennard Gorge: we started to walk at 1500h, and it was to be a round trip of only 1:30 h, the trail took us initially through a dry creek, then we had to climb into and out of a canyon, and finally made a long descent of the canyon wall to arrive at the lookout; the waterfall was dry and only a small pool remained, but the gorge was impressive, deep and very narrow. At the end we were exhausted, the temperature was 32° C and the sun followed each of our steps, at night we only desired our bed.

Lennard Gorge

Cruzamos la cordillera King Leopold, los acantilados hicieron que el viaje fuera placentero por la variedad de paisajes, las flores amarillas y rojas fueron un hermoso toque en estas tierras secas. Visitamos Lennard Gorge, comenzamos a caminar a las tres y tendríamos un viaje de ida y vuelta de solo 1.30 h. El sendero nos llevó inicialmente a través de un arroyo seco, luego tuvimos que subir y bajar por un cañón y, finalmente, realizar una extensa caminata hacia abajo a través de la pared del cañón para llegar al mirador, la cascada estaba seca y solo quedaba una pequeña piscina, pero el cañon fue impresionante, profundo y muy estrecho. Al final estábamos agotados, la temperatura fue de 32 ° C y el sol siguió cada uno de nuestros pasos, en la noche solo deseábamos nuestra cama.

Bell Gorge

We slept in Silent Gorge, a campground near  Bell Gorge; on the basis of our previous experience we decided to walk in the mornings and travel during the afternoon when the sun is strong. So in the morning after a light breakfast, we crossed the grass land to the dry river bed, and walked through it until we arrived at the upper part of a beautiful gorge, with multicoloured rock cliffs from which one can enjoy views of pools of clear refreshing water in addition to the play of the water dropping down the walls of the falls. The sunlight creates scintillating reflections on the upper side of the rock beds forming the different levels of the falls.

Dormimos en Silent Gorge, un campamento cerca de Bell Gorge, con las experiencias anteriores, decidimos caminar por las mañanas y viajar por la tarde cuando el sol está fuerte. Así que por la mañana, después de un desayuno ligero, cruzamos la tierra de pastos hasta el lecho seco del río, y caminamos a través de él hasta llegar a la parte superior de un hermoso cañon, con acantilados de rocas multicolores desde donde se puede disfrutar de vistas de piscinas de aguas cristalinas y refrescantes. Además, del juego del agua cayendo a las paredes de las cataratas, la luz del sol crea un reflejo de centelleo en la parte superior de las capas de roca formando diferentes niveles en la catarata.

Galvans Gorge

After some time crossing the savanna on a corrugated, sometimes maddening, road, we arrived at Galvans Gorge; the trail leads up a green canyon past quiet pools, on which float lily flowers, with a variety of birds in the trees. A little further on is a tranquil pond surrounded by rocky cliffs inviting the visitor to a refreshing swim, which we did. On one of the shaded cliff faces is an aboriginal representation of Wandjina with two snakes.

Después de algún tiempo cruzando la sabana por un camino corrugado, algunas veces enloquecedor, llegamos al Galvans Gorge, el sendero conduce a un cañón verde a través de piscinas tranquilas, en las que flotan las flores de Lili y una variedad de aves en los árboles. Un poco más lejos, hay un tranquilo estanque rodeado de acantilados rocosos que invita al visitante a darse un refrescante baño y eso hicimos. En una de las caras sombreadas del acantilado hay una representación aborigen de Wandjina con dos serpientes.

At the end of the afternoon we arrived at Mt. Barnett, a station with petrol and a little bit of everything; after shopping for basic items, we camped in Manning Gorge Camp, close to the river. Our day started early and at 0800h we were en route to the gorge, we crossed the river using a rope-operated boat, then we walked one hour through savanna, and then an eternity descending the canyon wall to the river pools. We found a magnificent river with clear waters, sandy beach, and rocky terraces all around; the waterfall was only dripping but we could see the beautiful structure of the walls; two minutes later we were in the water, swimming with a great variety of fish, seeing the rays of the sun in the water, and enjoying the freedom of movement. After this pleasant experience our return was faster and we were ready to continue east on our route.

Al final de la tarde llegamos al  Mt. Barnett, una estación con gasolina y un poco de todo, después de comprar cosas básicas, acampamos en Manning, cerca del río. Nuestro día comenzó temprano y a as 8:00 a.m. estábamos en ruta hacia el cañon, cruzamos el lago del río con un bote de cuerda, luego caminamos 1 hora por la sabana y una eternidad bajando la pared del cañón hasta las lagunas del río. Encontramos un magnífico río con aguas cristalinas, playas de arena y terrazas rocosas alrededor; la cascada solo estaba goteando pero pudimos ver la hermosa estructura de las paredes, dos minutos después estábamos en el agua, nadando con una gran variedad de peces, viendo los rayos del sol pasando por el agua y disfrutando de la libertad de movimiento. Después de la agradable experiencia, el regreso fue rápido y estábamos listos para continuar nuestra ruta hacia el este.

Pool at Ellenbrae River

Our next destination was Ellenbrae Station, a place with around 800.000 acres and 4000 head of wild short-horned cattle; this place opens for tourism six months of the year during the dry season, and is famous for its green garden at the homestay and the scones baked every day. We arrived later, on time to have a hot shower, with a thin stream of water, have a get together with other travellers, and have a wonderful light dinner before the temperature dropped to levels at which the only comfortable place is the bed. Next day we enjoyed coffee and some protein components of breakfast and then the expected scone, reading books on the plants and birds of the region; 4,5 Km away a big pool in the Ellenbrae River was the excuse to swim and refresh ourselves.

Nuestro siguiente destino fue Ellenbrae Station, un lugar con aproximadamente 800.000 acres y 4.000 cabezas de vacas salvajes de cuernos cortos, que abre al turismo durante 6 meses del año durante la temporada seca, y es famosa por su jardín verde en la casa principal y  los Scones horneados todos los días. Llegamos tarde, justo a  tiempo para tomar una ducha caliente, con una pequeña línea de agua, reunirnos con otros viajeros y tener una maravillosa cena ligera, antes de que la temperatura bajara a niveles en los que el único lugar cómodo era la cama. Al día siguiente disfrutamos del café y algunos componentes proteicos del desayuno y luego el esperado scone,  leyendo libros de plantas y aves de la región; A 4,5 Km, una gran piscina en el río Ellenbrae fue la excusa para nadar y refrescarnos.
